Leptospirosis is probably something that you have never heard of before reading this article. It is actually a form of bacteria that comes from the urine of both wild and domestic animals. So far the majority of occurrences of this disease has occurred in more tropical climates. It can also be transmitted through soil or water that has been in contact with an infected animal. It has also been proved that a lot of farmers tend to get this condition.
This is why so many doctors try to warn those who travel to make sure that they know everything they should about the area they are traveling to. For example if you choose to go white water rafting in an area where Leptospirois happens to be an epidemic than you could be putting yourself and loved ones at risk. Many doctors have found this particular disease somewhat difficult to diagnose, due to the fact that it is very similar to other tropical disease. Some of the symptoms that are associated with this illness are chills, fever, nausea, cough, and diarrhea. In order for any doctor to determine if you are carrying this disease they will have to run some very special tests, since it is somewhat rare in some areas and difficult to detect.
Some vacationers have wondered if there is some type of shot you can get in order to prevent a person from contracting this disease. Unfortunately doctors and scientists have been unsuccessful in coming up with a vaccine that will protect from Leptospirosis. If you are planning are traveling to a tropical climate it is very important that you take the following precautions:
1. Check your vacation destination thoroughly. If you plan on going in or near any river or plan on participating in some type of water activity you should make sure you check with the local government on any health risks or warnings. It may seem like a waste of time but it is really worth a little extra added effort.
2. Talk to your doctor before you travel to find out if you would be at risk for Leptospirosis. Those who have pre existing conditions could be at a higher risk than others to contract Leptospirosis.
3. Never wonder off into an unpopulated area or an area that is restricted. Some people like to go exploring while they are on vacation. This is especially true for teenagers and young children. If you are planning a vacation with your children you should alert them to possible dangers and make sure that you keep them under your supervision.
But what if you do contract this disease? What treatment is there for you? If it is found that you have Leptospirosis then your doctor will probably choose to treat your with some sort of antimicrobial agent such as penicillin. They will want to start the treatment immediately. So if you are planning a tropical vacation let your doctor know in advance, this will give them the opportunity to warn you to possible dangers. In addition to the fact that if you become sick while you are on vacation they will already know where you have been and will immediately run the appropriate tests.
