Are Science Fiction TV Shows Dead?

Sci-Fi is Dead and Sy Fy Seems to Bare No Relation to the Meaning of the Name

Nicholas Ward
In my youth I can remember watching Star Trek and thinking "hey that's cool" but as time progressed the episodes got further apart. Then eventually it was gone entirely, but that wasn't the end of it. Next was Star Gate SG-1, one of my favorite shows that took the dive into oblivion, followed by Andromeda, and a few others. Though Star Gate is still around in the form of Atlantis it hardly has the same feel as the original

Are science fiction TV shows dead: Sci-Fi to syfy

After all of that Sci-Fi changed its name to Sy Fy, but that's not all that changed. Sy Fy has become a network for horror movies, and depraved gore, with open slots filled by wrestling. How they can even consider that science fiction is beyond me.

What is going on with the world today, that people would rather be scared (or not so scared) by some freakish creature on the television, than check out some future gadgets? Have we simply advanced in technology so far that no one has any foresight anymore?

Are science fiction TV shows dead: Star Trek is back.

The recent star trek movie had given me hope that the great show would be returning with a new timeline based off the movie, but alas it was in vain. I've heard nothing of a new series. There was a time when people thought science was hot, but now there is nothing on TV that I even care to watch.

Other great series that bit the dust include, The Seeker, Kings, and Heroes, literally every show I actually watched appears to have been canceled. All this makes me wonder if it's even worth owning a TV anymore. Not all of these where Sci-Fi series. However, they were all great shows that encompassed an intrinsic look on alternate realities.

Are science fiction TV shows dead: Reality shows.

It's sad that today it would seem that more than %75 of television is composed of horror, soap ops, or reality shows. Fantasy and Sci-Fi have been nearly completely taken out of the equation. Even the Sunday Times has taken notice of the impending fate of the entire Sci-Fi franchise when they wrote "Sci-fi films are as dead as Westerns, says Ridley Scott" in 2007. Statistic showed as far back as 2004 70% of the UK populace where watching reality shows instead of good old fashioned fiction. Is it true that reality shows are soon to dominate the market, overtaking the entire Sci-Fi fantasy franchise? I would love to hear what you think about this.

I'm a Science Fiction Fan and have been watching shows like Star Trek and all the shows that came afterwards since I was a little kid. I seriously hope they don't fade away because I really like watching them.

Those were both great shows. Lexx had a certain natural sexy thing going for it and farscape was just awesome...
I wish there were more like them...

It is a sign of the times. Most of the science fiction that has been fairly recent has been the total opposite of what my generation grew up on as Sci-Fi. Gone are futuristic settings and surreal atmospheres. Gone are likeable characters and adventure oriented plots. Today's attempts are more concerned with human elements. Sex, politics, sex, family issues, sex, religion, sex, fanservice, geeky in-jokes and references, sex sex and more sex...Also a lot of today's sci-fi is too self referential and too reliant on geeky homage, hence the fanservice. I wish sci-fi would go back to being truly entertaining instead of being treated as a performance.

Warehouse 13 seems a lot like Friday the 13th series. I figured StarGate was the salvation of SciFi. Most of the other so-called SciFic shows are too much in the present and not science fiction enough for my taste. The newer Dr. Who was well done. We have caught up with a lot of it and done the rest to death. Time for some new thinking that pushes past the obvious. Maybe it is taking a rest. We will always be wondering what the future will be like. The SciFi of H.G. Well and Star Trek are far apart. The next era will be just as far apart from what we have now.

As a writer who wrote several episodes of 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' & 'Deep Space Nine', I'm glad you like Trek, however TV science fiction these days is flowering quite nicely. Not only does Fox have the great "Fringe" on air, but Syfy has 'Warehouse 13', 'Eureka', 'Sanctuary' and 'StarGate: Universe' - 'StarGate: Atlantis' was cancelled last year after a great run. Perhaps you mean more "space" based sci-fi shows, or what some call 'space opera' - if that's the case, then there's a bit of a dearth of those, but I'm betting we'll see a resurgence soon enough.

I love old sci fi stuff.

There was a time when sci-fi reigned on television. Not anymore.

Make that 3 different Ghost hunter series, after taking another look at the Sy Fy line up I notice that nearly %25 is reality shows with nearly %50 of the top shows being held by reality shows and %25 of that is ghost hunters alone.

I hated Atlantis.. but it still airs. They may be re-runs, but I don't really watch it, so I wouldn't know on that one. I do watch universe and they are suppose to be picking it back up for a season 2, though there has been a lot of debate on that topic. I just hate seeing all these horror movies and reality shows like "ghost hunter" on Sy Fy. Sy Fy still airs re-runs of Atlantis, has season 2 of universe coming, and has Haven, Warehouse 13, and maybe a handful of other REAL Sci-Fi titles. Things are getting slim however very slim. Ghost Hunter more appropriately fits into the category of "reality" and Ani-mondays wth is that? add to that scare tactics and "Fact or Faked" and you get a line up of re-runs and reality shows.
