Are Skill Game Sites a Good Way to Make Money Playing Video Games?

R. J. Gardiner
There are a number of ways out there to make money for playing video games, but in general trying to make a living by playing video games is a bad idea. One particular method of making money from video games, playing skill games for money, has become the latest lure for gamers looking to pocket some extra money. Is this truly a good strategy for earning a little cash? The answer, not surprisingly, is no, and here is why.

To begin with, skill game sites like gameduell.com or king.com require entry fees for each competition. This is how they keep their sites funded. Once the entry fee has been paid, the contestant battles against another gamer in an identical game. The player with the highest score wins the match and gets whatever amount of money was bet.

That is the basics of how these sites work, but they are designed to keep players plunging more money into their accounts to keep battling. This is because of the ranking system. The ranking system is designed to match players of similar skill levels against each other. This is to keep lesser skilled players from getting discouraged, since they would continually get beaten by better players. The players with the higher ranks play each other, and the players with the lower ranks also compete amongst themselves. This sounds like a pretty fair system, right?

It is when it comes to wins and losses, because it means that the average player will win around 50% of his/her games once he/she has settled into an appropriate rank. If you lose more, you will drop in level until you win some. If you win some, you will rise in level until you lose some. Monetarily, you will have to deposit more money into your account because of this, since the entry fees are more than 50% of the amount of money that could be won. For those looking to make money off of these sites, it means that only the top one to two percent of gamers will be able to consistently win a substantial amount of money.

The only way around this system is to play non-money matches, which most of these sites allow you to do once you have joined, and then intentionally play miserably in order to lower your rank. Once your rank is near the bottom, return to the money matches and play until you reach your actual level. Then repeat intentional losing in the non-money matches again and so forth.

Playing against another competitor head-to-head is a lot of fun, but if you join one of these sites don't be deceived into thinking that it will be a great way to make some extra money. Realize instead that the most fun will be had playing the non-money matches and just enjoying the games.

I must be living in a closet as I had no idea that people get paid to play these games. I learned something here.
