Even the friendliest of spirits are more likely to appear at night, when there are fewer people around and it is then that you will often hear your child chatting and laughing from his crib or toddler bed, as if someone were in there talking with him. You might not be freaked out by the idea that your child can see ghosts, but if they are disturbing his sleep, it can be a real problem!
Most mediums recommend simply telling the spirit to go away, but this doesn't always work. It is worth a try at first, though. Go into your child's room when he is in the middle of one of his chatter sessions and address the spirit directly. You just need to say "You are dead and you don't belong here. Go away." Anything along those lines is fine. If you know who the ghost is, all the better, use their name. Older children can even tell the ghost to go away themselves.
You might also call in a medium who will be able to contact the spirit and find out why it is there. This can be expensive, however and you need to find a reputable one who won't just pretend. If the problem is real, you need a real solution. A priest is useful as well. Having the house blessed can get rid of most spirits, although a few will still hang around.
There are certain actions that can get rid of spirits as well. First of all, open all the windows in your home and then take a handful of sage and light it. The thick smoke that comes off the bundle of sage is thought to have spiritual cleaning properties. Use this to cleanse the house, a little smoke in each room while you repeat that all spirits must leave immediately through the windows.
Once you have "smudged" the house with sage smoke, you want to make sure the spirits don't come back. The best way to do this is to use salt. Any salt will do, but the thick grained sea salt will stay put better. Lay a thick line of this across doors and windowsills. Outside is usually best so children won't make a mess of it. Spirits cannot cross the salt and therefore cannot re-enter the house. You will need to check and replenish the salt frequently, since a break in the line can allow things to come back in.
Many people don't believe in this spirit business. Maybe you are one. But if your child stays up half the night talking to invisible people, you might just want to try the techniques given here and see if they work.
