Are You Suffering from Back Pain?

When the Back Hurts, the Entire Body Seems to Hurt

Keeping the back healthy is vital because when the back hurts, the entire body seems to hurt. People suffering from back pain can often manage that pain and get relief without having surgery and without the use of prescription pain pills. Simply changing old habits can often ease back pain or take it away completely and prevent the pain from coming back. Following are some way to provide back pain relief.

Lifting Heavy Objects

First and foremost, before lifting a heavy object, use common sense. Don't lift anything that is unreasonably heavy. Even using the correct lifting technique won't prevent a back injury if the object you are lifting is just too heavy. When you do lift something heavy, bend at the knees and use the muscles of the legs and not the back. Same goes for when you set the item down, bend at the knees. During the lifting process, keep your spine as straight as possible. Twisting or turning can cause injury to the back. Also, make every effort to keep the item as close to your body as possible to prevent back strain.

Furniture That Provides Support

Furniture needs to provide support and proper alignment to the back in order to keep it healthy and pain free. Sitting on soft overstuffed furniture does not provide that needed support. Think about it. When sitting on soft furniture that provides no support, the back often will end up in a hunched over position. This is exactly the opposite of providing the firm support that the back needs. The same goes for beds. The bed needs to be firm enough to provide proper alignment to the back.

Back Pain Relief

Getting regular exercise, such as walking, can help reduce/relieve back pain symptoms. Be sure to stand up tall without slouching during exercise and for that matter, when not exercising.

Soaking in a tub of warm water can help relieve mild back pain symptoms. Pain can be further reduced by placing a heating pad under your back where the pain is located.

Ibuprofen, which is an anti-inflammatory medication and pain reliever, can be used to relieve back pain. Ibuprofen is available over the counter. It is advisable to contact a physician if you need to take this medication for an extended period of time as it can cause stomach problems.
