Are You Suffering from Parent-Paparazzi-Addiction or PPA?

Tashia M. Heath
As a first time Mother to a beautiful 16 month old boy and with today's technology I find it hard to not to take pictures of my son. Every day I grab my camera and snap a shot or two. Lately I have noticed the downside to all the technology we have today. I seem to be so worried about "capturing the moment" that I seldom get to enjoy the special event in it's entirety.

I'm sure I am not the only one guilty of becoming a parent with a paparazzi addiction. I notice that I am constantly bringing out the camera or video camera at any given time. I have gone so far as packing it in my diaper bag as though it's as important as diapers and wipes. Even taking it to the grocery store, which is the last place for a camera.

So what can you do to rid yourself of this ridiculous addiction? Leave the camera at home! That's right, just simply go out without it. Narrow down the times you bring the ole' digital camera out with you is a great way to rid yourself of the habit. For example, if you know you are going to the park and that you go to the park quite often consider only taking the camera with you once a month. This way you will be able to enjoy playing around with your children rather than just sitting on the sidelines snapping away.

Bring the camera out only during special events and limit the time you have the camera in your hand. Of course you are going to want to capture the holidays on "film", but limit the amount of time that you are taking pictures or recording the event. If you have a camcorder consider purchasing a tripod so that no one has to hold on to it the entire event. Take turns with someone. Take pictures for a few minutes and then hand the camera off to your spouse. If you don't have a spouse or significant other then maybe a sibling or mature niece or nephew.

Taking pictures is important, but taking in the memories that your child will have is even more important. Don't loose another wonderful memory to PPA. Pick your moments and really enjoy what it is your trying to preserve rather than trying to take pictures or what you are trying to preserve. The best shot you'll ever take is the memory inside your head!

Ha. Guilty as charged! Thank God for digital cameras. I used to spend a king's ransom on film and developing.
