Are They All Bad or Do I Have a Faulty Slap Chop Food Chopping Machine?

Sometimes I look at the infomercials and just can't make up my mind if they are a good buy or not. My husband Len, always slices or dices the onions for me, as my eyes always run if I do them. So he had mentioned to me about the Slap Chop. I said to him that if it worked, I would be happy to buy it, but I really hate paying the shipping and handling. Also if it has to go back then you have all the bother of returning it.

We were in Gulf View Square Mall, and saw a new store, it had the 'Sold on TV' or 'As seen on TV' products in there. I purchased the Produce Bags and the Slap Chop.

The Slap Chop was in it's box and looked exactly the same as the ones you would purchase off the television. The price was only $5. As I turned the box around to look at it, I saw that it had a limited 10 year warranty, so I figured I couldn't loose.

I didn't open it immediately, so tonight we were having an Indian curry. I make them on a regular basis, and it calls for chopped onions. I gave Len the opportunity of using the Slap Chop first.

Upon opening the box there were no instructions, but then we found them on the outside of the box.

Len cut the onion in half, and took the skin off. It does state on the box that it separates the skin from onions or garlic, but Len figured he would make it easier for the Slap Chop. He placed the half an onion onto the chopping board, put the Slap Chop over it and then held the Slap Chop with his left hand, and pushed down on the plunger at the top. He did this several times and the onion was in tiny pieces, medium pieces, and large pieces.

He took out the tiny pieces and slapped down on it again. It made marks in the onion but didn't cut it. He tried another half an onion and this was no better. When he lifted up the Slap Chop and looked at the blades, one of them was bent. The clear plastic, that is cut out where the blades go into, wouldn't stay in place, because of the blade being bent. When Len tried it without this the onion just went up into the machine.

Len cleaned it out and ended up chopping the onions by hand.

I had apples that needed to be chopped for the curry so I asked if I could try it. I tried to get the plastic over the blades so that the food wouldn't go up into it, and I kind of managed to do it. I then put 2 quarters of an apple beneath the Slap Chop. I wanted to make it as easy as possible. I slapped down on the plunger 4 or 5 times, and I ended up with large, and also pieces of apple that were like mush. I was so disappointed with it, and feel that this one must be a reject.

Len offered to clean the Slap Chop for me. He turned the top of the Slap Chop and opened up the Slap Chop. It has a butterfly opening which means that your hands don't go near the blades.

A little more information about it:

"No changing blades.
Combine food as you chop.
Rotating stainless steel blades.
The more you slap, the finer the food."

The Slap Chop works with raw potatoes, mushrooms, green peppers, boiled eggs, carrots, celery, radishes, tomato, cilantro, jalapeno, onions, garlic, nuts, chocolate, and fruit.

We really didn't have a chance with the one we purchased, so I am planning on heading back to the Mall to have it replaced.

We took the faulty Slap Chop back to the store, and it was replaced for us. We tried the new one the same day, and still had a problem with the large pieces of onion, going up in between the blades.

This is a product that I cannot recommend to anyone. It takes 10 times longer than chopping it by hand, and you still have large, medium, and tiny pieces of onion, when you finally get it to work.
