The first thing you need to do is go off the pill. You should consider stopping the use of birth control a few months before planning to start trying. This should allow you to better predict when you will be ovulating and what your natural menstrual cycle is like. Also, it can (but not necessarily) take a little bit of time for your hormone level to go back to normal after you stop taking the pill.
You should also start taking a prenatal vitamin at least three months before beginning to try. Taking a vitamin high in folic acid can reduce the chance of having a baby with a brain and/or spinal birth defect. Plus, these vitamins also give your body plenty of other valuable nutrients needed for a healthy pregnancy.
Everyone knows that drinking and smoking is a big no-no while you are pregnant, but maybe you should think about scaling back or quitting all together right now. You should talk to your partner about this, also. Did you know that excessive alcohol consumption can interfere with fertility and can lower a man's sperm count? Smoking can also affect your egg and your partner's sperm quality. Not to mention, if smoking and drinking continue once you are pregnant, you are putting your baby at risk for birth defects, miscarriage, and preterm labor.
Talk to other female family members to find out if anyone has had difficulty conceiving or experienced any other pregnancy complications. It is a good idea to get all the information now concerning family history and health conditions.
If you have any weight issues, try to resolve them now. Losing excess weight can make it easier to get pregnant and it can assist in giving you a healthier pregnancy. Also, though, if you are underweight, you could suffer from fertility issues like not having regular periods. This can make it hard to predict when you are ovulating.
Do you need your caffeine in the morning? Well, excessive caffeine intake can increase your chance of having a miscarriage. There is some debate from doctors on how much daily caffeine is safe while you are pregnant. Some say 100 milligrams is okay, but others say absolutely none. Especially during the first trimester.
Before you get pregnant is also a great time to check your stress level and make any necessary changes in your life which cause you stress. You should research some relaxation techniques. A few ideas could be to try to sleep more, take up yoga, or find a relaxing hobby.
Last, but not least, save! You'll be surprised how much money it takes to have a baby. You could set up a college fund, start stocking up on diapers, set money aside for doctor's bills and any other unexpected expenses. Save, save, save!!
I hope these ideas have helped you to get your life organized before you greet that little bundle of joy.
