Are Throwback Jerseys Used Too Much?

I spent last night trying to come up with a new article idea, because I hadn't done anything this week. A longtime friend of mine sent me a message on Facebook, suggesting the use of throwback jerseys in the NFL. I got to thinking about it after she suggested it, and it makes sense. What started off as a trend by former WWE Champion John Cena has apparently turned into a weekly trend by the NFL. I didn't really notice it at first, but it hit me during the Tennessee Titans game this past Sunday at New England. It seems the last three weeks or so, the National Football League has been using the old-school jerseys during the majority of the games. The Denver Broncos have been playing in the mud colored brown uniforms with their jersey numbers on their individual helmets. The Patriots played in the classic red and white jerseys, with the player on the helmet in the 3-point stance. Even the Tennessee Titans got in on the actions, with the now-defunct Houston Oilers helmets on display in the Meadowlands on Sunday.

I like the occasional use of the throwback look, but not every week. John Cena used to come out every week on the WWE's weekly "SmackDown!" program, sporting a different retro jersey every week. He would wear a different league jersey every week, alternating between the NBA, NFL, MLB, or whatever he could find that would look good. But it was one person doing it. He was able to pull it off and still keep the nostalgia of the look intact. Nowadays, it seems to be as regular as the traditional home and road jerseys. I like the alternate jerseys that teams wear from time to time, just to change things up. But personally, there should only be a certain set of days during baseball or basketball season to do wear the old jerseys. And maybe one or two weeks during the NFL season where the teams would sport the classic look. Plus, it would make for a great promotional night for the stadium.

It's just become overkill in the NFL. These teams start to wear the old jerseys so much, that when they wear the new jerseys, fans won't recognize them. And so many teams have new looks now anyway, I have a hard enough time figuring out each team as it is! Don't get me wrong...like I said, I like the throwback look. It brings back memories of growing up watching my favorite players from Ryne Sandberg, Dan Marino, and others. But just keep it to a minimum. You don't want to take the effect away from it. You want to be able to take your kids to the ballpark and show them what the players wore when you were there age. You don't want to say, "Hey kids, the Astros are wearing the 1970s jerseys tonight," only to have their response be, "Yea, they did that the last time they were home, too." Just takes all the fun out of it.

they have a semi-legitimate reason for putting on throwbacks every week this season... it is the AFL's 50th anniversary. however i agree that general overuse of throwback jerseys does make the nostalgia value go down and gets tiring after a while.

After the Pats' 59-0 thrashing of Tennessee, I think they should keep the 'throwback' uniforms on for good! They look much better than their 'modern' blue outfits. And Pat Patriot > Nike Elvis Patriot!

The throwback jerseys are paying homage to the AFL's 50th anniversary..

Even the referee's do it with the pink shirts..

Notice it's only AFC teams participating.. I see nothing wrong with it, it's a great way to pay homage to the great players of the AFL and AFC..

They even offer an AFL expansion pack to Madden 2010..

  • lol its funny.10/20/2009

Have to say its true. Its the 50th anniversary of the afl. Have any nfc teams done it? Sometimes people tend to overthink things. This is one of those times. By the way this was the last week for many teams to wear them.
