When you have a thyroid condition, such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, there is no doubt that drugs are often necessary to regulate the thyroid. Once you are diagnosed, you probably learn over time that your thyroid condition will not effect you too much when you take your thyroid drugs. However, one of the things that you may not know is that thyroid drugs can often be very dangerous to the body. Learn more about the short-term and long-term effects that thyroid drugs can cause and what you can do to prevent them.

What are the Potential Short-Term Side Effects of Thyroid Drugs?

The short-term side effects of thyroid drugs are not known to be much different than the side effects which you can possibly experience with other types of drugs. Some of the most common short-term side effects of most thyroid drugs include allergic reactions, vomiting or nausea, and unusual chest pain or irregular heartbeat. The short-term side effects mainly vary according to the patient and the specific type of thyroid drug.

What are the Potential Long-Term Side Effects of Thyroid Drugs?

While you may not even realize it, your body can be harmed by prolonged use of thyroid drugs. The most common long-term side effects of thyroid drugs are bone density loss and osteoporosis. It is also believed that arthritis can be a long-term side effect of certain thyroid drugs, though there is not currently any substantial evidence of this.

How Can You Avoid Side Effects Caused by Thyroid Drugs?

As already mentioned, thyroid drugs are more or less necessary if you have a thyroid condition. While you probably want to avoid both short-term and long-term side effects, you also probably do not want to suffer from the side effects of your thyroid condition. The best way to prevent any side effects is to ask your doctor questions. Inform him or her about any other type of medical problems that you may have before going on any type of thyroid medication. If you have any questions about medications that you may need to take while you are on thyroid medication, it is important for you to make sure that you do so. It is also important for you to learn whether or not the thyroid medication that you are taking is the right dosage. Following the instructions on any dosage that you are giving is very important, as taking more than what is necessary can really harm your body. If you notice any unusual side effects, whether or not they were what was previously listed, it is important to make sure that you contact your primary care physician.
