"Jesus follower". This is one of the phrases we can see on many people's profiles on the internet. This is one of the "sentences" that many believers boast with, but it really made me think about what does it really mean to be a follower of Jesus.
If you claim to be a Jesus follower, then it means you are second. He is leading and you are right behind Him. So, let me ask you where are you with your life today?
See, if we say we are followers of Jesus and that means He is leading and we are following Him, then we need to figure out where He is first to see if we are really following.
Are you living with someone and you are not married to them? If yes, then how can you say you follow Jesus? If you are following , then it means He led you there. If you are following that means someone is leading. And if Jesus is leading, can we say that Jesus led you to live in a promiscous relationship? If you divorced your spouse or consider divorcing, can you really say that you are following Jesus? Does that mean He is leading you out of your marriage to be with someone else and you are following His footsteps? Are you seriously saying that Jesus is doing that and you are just following?
If you say you follow Jesus, then are you sharing the Gospel with others? I am pretty sure He leads us that way. If you are not where He is, then you are not following. You are stagnant or going the opposite direction.
We take throw this sentence around so lightly: " I am a follower of Jesus". What we really mean is that we want to believe that everything is forgiven by faith no matter how we live and we can still do what we want. Most of us want to get to heaven, but without much commitment to His will; without much obedience; without REALLY following.
What you are divorced and you haven't seen your kids in moths and you say you are following Jesus? ( I understand if the law wont let you....but I am talking about things you CAN control here not what you can't). Would Jesus lead you away from your children, from your wife, from your husband? Even you who blame your spouse....would Jesus not lead you to forgive, do better towards them, and be a healing agent to them instead of breaking their hearts, including your kids.? God is a God of restoration and He has the ministry of reconciliation. If you don't reconcile with your spouse, then whose ministry are you really following?
See, most of us want God to be merciful to us, but not to our spouses. Most of us want God to forgive us, but not those who hurt us. Most us uf see the evil in others and not ourselves. Most of uf blame others for our mistakes and failures in life, and not ourselves.
Are you really FOLLOWING? Are you really walking in His footsteps? Where you are right now, could you honestly say that , that is where Jesus led you? If He did not, then why are you still there? Remember, that if you are not following Him, you are doing exactly the opposite or stalling.
Let's rethink what a true follower is and next time we say, " I am a Jesus follower", we know we really are where He would go.
