Are You Using the Correct Size Tampon?

Ambriel Maji
Did you know if you use the wrong size of tampon you can put yourself at risk for getting TSS? TSS is toxic shock syndrome, rare but a very dangerous infection. TSS doesn't occur from the use of tampons but rather from leaving tampons in too long. Most females will use a size of tampon bigger than needed for their flow to ensure they have no leakage problems.

A tampon should be changed every 4-6 hours regardless if it needs it. You may find that you need to change your tampon more often if you are using to small of a tampon. Tampons come in various sizes and depending on how much menstrual bleeding you have you may have to experiment with different sizes to find the correct size you need.

Tampon Sizes:

• Junior/Slim Absorbency - are rated for menstrual flow 6 grams and under

• Regular Absorbency - are rated for menstrual flow 6-9 grams.

• Super Absorbency - are rated for menstrual flow 9-12 grams.

• Super Plus Absorbency - are rated for menstrual flow 12-15 grams.

• Ultra Absorbency - are rated for menstrual flow15-18 grams.

There are a few indications you may be using a tampon that is too big for your menstrual flow. These would include the tampon not being at least 3/4 full when removing it after 4-6 hours and the removal of the tampon hurts due to it being dry. When you remove a tampon it should slide out easily from the vagina without any pain.

Always make sure you follow the directions on the container of tampons if you are unsure how to insert or remove a tampon. Each brand of tampon or style may come with a different tip or technique that is standard for the brand you are using so it's always best to read before you use them.
