Something so simple as washing your face can't possibly be done wrong, can it? You bet it can! The skin on your face is very delicate, and it deserves a little extra attention when it gets washed. After all, it has to last you your entire life. Washing your face properly will help keep your skin in optimum condition, and keep you looking as radiant as ever. Here are a few tips to make sure that you're washing your face the right way.
Wash your face twice a day. First of all, you need to wash your face twice a day. You need to wash it at night to remove any makeup, dirt, grime, and yes, pollution, that settles on your face during the day. And you need to wash it in the morning to get rid of all the dead skin cells that were shed at night. Besides, a clean face creates the best canvas for your makeup application.
Don't use soap. Years of teaching skin care has made me a die-hard when it comes to using cleanser. Soap strips your face of the good stuff as well as the bad stuff, leaving it dry and hard. Use a great cleanser, specifically made for your skin type, to help your skin stay healthy and beautiful.
Wash with a gentle, circular motion. Gently massage the cleanser on your damp face in a circular motion. You want to move your hands upwards and outwards as you create small circles. This gets your face clean without over-scrubbing.
Rinse well. Make sure you rinse away all the dirt, impurities, and cleanser. Leaving it in place is just as bad as not washing your face at all. Rinse with warm water. Some women like to finish rinsing with a dash of cold water to help close their pores.
Use a clean, dedicated washcloth. Use a super-soft wash cloth that is set aside just for your face. Make sure you wash it often to keep mold, mildew, and other nastiness away from your delicate skin.
Air dry or gently blot dry. It's tempting to scrub your skin dry, but just don't do it. Gently blot it dry with a clean, soft towel or let it air dry. Always treat your skin as if it were delicate silk.
How does your face feel? If your face feels tight or greasy after you wash it, you may be using the wrong products. Use a clear or serum based cleanser for oily skin, and use a creamier-looking cleanser for dry skin.
Apply skin products. After your skin has dried, you may begin applying your favorite treatment products. Apply serums first, then creams, then your moisturize. Apply any SPF next, and foundation or powder last.
Washing your face may seem like a chore, especially when all you want to do is go to bed or get on with your day. But taking a few minutes a day to keep your skin healthy will keep you looking great for a long time.
