Are We Finally Free

Jo Hill
In the past we where treated like nothing but slaves,
The rags that we wore became so torn and tattered,
We worked our strong bodies into an early grave.
But, with God on our side their was nothing else that mattered.

We would sing to our Lord with voices so strong and sure,
With our Belief in our souls we knew Salvation was near.
We would share our Love with 'The One' that was so pure,
For He knew that what the future held for us was so dear.

Now, our descendants act like they where alive back then,
But, that is very hard to believe with what they choose to wear.
Not, using respect towards themselves, family or even friends.
They boast about their "Bling" and the style of their hair.

Talking so loud that their voices can reach the Heaven's up high.
But, do they Thank the Lord for the Prayers sung in the past?
Not caring who they hurt, just so the other gang member dies.
Or, have they really forgotten their ancestor's suffering at Last?

So, when you hear a person say, "My Ancestor was a Slave!"
And, they act like they are the "Big Man Around Town."
Know that they really don't remember who paved their way.
For they never had a whip on their back; to beat them until their Blood hit the ground.

Are We Finally Free, I ask you today?
Our Ancestor would fall to their knees, bow their heads and pray.
"Freedom at Last, until we reach our old age."
Our Descendants would stand with legs far apart,
Draw their guns and aim straight for their Enemies Hearts.
Are we Finally Free I ask you, again? Think this time my brother,
"Ask Our Beloved Father, Our One True Friend..."
