1) One observer noticed that the compass reading of his home appears to have shifted 5 degrees eastward within a one year period.
2) An excellent paper by Flaviio Barbierio details how a pole shift could happen quickly. This is an interesting read but is calculus intensive. It is predicated upon an asteroid hitting the Earth, but shows that the likelihood of this is high. It models the Earth as a gyroscope, and if you work the equations taking into account the centrifigal force equations - you will see that it is entirely plausible that water buildup on either pole in the form of ice caps and glaciers could create an instability every so many years. Even without the impact of an asteroid, my analysis shows that it is plausible that this weight imbalance could cause a full mechanical pole shift.
3) Evidence of prior earth-wide catastrophic events exists - siuch as in Tiahuanaco , and the La Brea Tar Pits .
4) From the Wisegeek.com,
"In the past 15 million years scientists found pole shifts occurred four times every 1 million years. Though this averages out to once every 250,000 years, switches do not occur at regular intervals. During one period in the Cretaceous, polarity remained constant for as long as 30 million years, though this is believed to be an anomaly. The last pole shift took place 790,000 years ago; causing some scientists to believe we're due, while others speculate a reversal is already underway."
5) From Wikipedia:
"Hugh Auchincloss Brown (23 December1879 - 19 November1975) was an electrical engineer best known for advancing a theory of catastropic pole shift. Brown argued that accumulation of ice at the poles caused recurring tipping of the axis in cycles of approximately 7 millennia. Brown argued that a shift was demonstrably imminent, and suggested the use of nuclear explosions to break-up the ice to forestall catastrophe."
As an electrical engineer myself, I have been following the magnetic field strength of the poles. If not a total mechanical reversal, it appears that we may be overdue for at least a magnetic reversal. Regarding the possibility of a mechanical reversal, if you swing a ball full of water, you will see that centrifugal forces act upon the water to distribute the mass in such a manner that it will flip over after so many revolutions.
Looking at the other side of this question, here is some evidence against the possibility of an impending pole shift:
1) The popular author of the book Pole Shift has flipped his personal polarity on believing this will happen.
2) Leroy Ellingberger raises some hard questions in this rebuttal to Hapgood (another scientist who proposed a pole shift theory).
3) Pole shift warnings on the web have been steeped in less than credible "New-agism" -as this author attests. It is hard to take scientific evidence as credible when those giving the news tell us that "millions of people will raise their vibrations to a new level and reach a new reality". Could they be very nicely describing the death experience? There are many credible people with demonstrable psychic skills. There are also a lot of cults out there who tell you that you can "avoid" this experience only by paying them money. These crackpots are causing many to dismiss the entire subject.
In my personal experience, I have seen more severe weather conditions in the last five years than I have seen in my entire life before. I live in California, and have highly sensitive hearing to high frequencies. I have been hearing a high pitched hum more and more frequently as the months pass, and I sense that the ground under me is shifting. My husband grew up in the Sierra Nevadas, and we spent a weekend there this summer on vacation. He commented that the moon was "in the wrong place" from where it should be for that time of year, in that location. My father and my husband are both very attached to the earth and are avid gardeners. They have both commented that the earth seems different, and their crops are suffering as a result.
I also remember reading about the finding of a frozen mastodon...frozen with tropical vegetation still in its mouth.
What will happen if there is a pole shift? If there is a magnetic pole shift, animals whose homing and migratory instincts rely on magnetic signals will begin to get confused and migration patterns will suffer. Our clocks will slow, and our electronics will malfunction more and more until they are useless at the point of the shift. High winds, earthquakes (the earth's core is magnetic in nature), volcanos, and hurricanes will increase in intensity until the actual shift occurs. If it is both magnetic and mechanical in nature, these events will occur at a high intensity rate leading to the actual shift. Plates will collide, and masses will rise from the ocean while others sink.
Although the evidence for a pole shift is as yet unconclusive, it is my opinion that it is better to be safe than sorry. What can you do?
1) Keep your eyes and ears to the ground, literally. Watch for changes and be aware of what is going on around you.
2) Look at the terra firma you live on. I have just finished a course in Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering as part of my goal to add a Civil Engineering degree to my portfolio of degrees. Do you live on loose packed sand? Move - it will liquify in an earthquake. Are you in the path of a retaining wall or dam if it breaks? Move. Are you in the path of a possible Tsunami? Move.
3) Prepare emergency supplies just in case
4) Get a crank operated radio
5) Learn to fish, and to grow food.
If we have had pole shifts in the past, and Hopi Indian records show that we have, obviously people survived to tell the story. My thoughts are that those who are aware, able to analyze the facts without denial, and street smart will survive even if we do experience a global cataclysm in the next few years. The human race is resiliant and pervasive - we will conquer even the worst that mother nature has to offer.
In conclusion, there is no way to know if or when there will be a pole shift. There is certainly enough data available to advise intelligent people to sit up and take notice - and be prepared.

Post a CommentI loved playing with spinning tops......
I am becoming increasingly convinced that a magnetic pole shift is emminent, but I don't think it will be something that will wipe us all out. I do think it is going to wreak havoc.
Hmmm... I'm a bit late to comment on this, but anyhow. At the very least
1) you have been able to distinguish between magnetical and physical (also called "TPW", True Pole Wandering) shifts, and
2) you credited a number of sources, AND
3) it didn't happen so far. So far, so good. :)
I'm sure you know all the recent literature related to that already, so I'll just mention Bob Frisell and Drunvalo Melchizedek for those interested in further speculation.
As far as I'm concerned, magnetical shifts are happening every now and then (about 150'000 years apart, but now we didn't have one for a *very* long time, so we're overdue).
As for TPW -- well, I've not seen *any* scientific facts for them whatsoever. Except for the known 25'000 year procession and some (1-3 degrees over the millennia) wobble of the axis of the earth, which I would consider as "to be expected" -- did you ever play with spinning tops?
But then, what do I know. Life's too short to worry about that kind of problem
