Are We Losing Verbal Communication Skills?

Lisa Wallace
Now a days you can tune into a television show virtually anywhere you are in the world. You can also play games or go online with one simple thing, a cell phone.

So, are we losing communication skills? My answer would be yes. And to back that up here is an example: A few days ago I was in my room and my boyfriend was watching TV in the living room. All of a sudden the power went out. And for a split second I thought "This is a good opportunity for us to talk". But the first thing my boyfriend did is see if there were any shows on the cell phone. It makes you wonder what people did before there was any kind of technology.

Even when we go out to dinner or something, of course we have our cell phones. So if we have nothing to say we have a distraction from each other. And yes, I admit it, I'm guilty of cell phone over usage too.
Another loss of verbal communication is the computer. If you own a computer, you can easily get lost in the internet. You can even date online. But how do you know that the person you are talking to isn't a young kid or a rapist. You don't, it's a gamble!

I feel that it is getting harder and harder to communicate verbally. As well as keeping eye contact with someone. When I started my relationship with my boyfriend, I had to relearn some communication skills. I could not talk to him about the way I was feeling without texting him on the cell. In everyones relationships (any relationship), if there is no verbal and eye communication, then what's the point?

Is this how we want our children to be raised, by technology? And the TV being a babysitter? I don't. There's already baby toys out there with some kind of technology. And as time goes on, things will get more advanced!
I don't know about anyone else but sometimes I miss not having technology.

Probably by the age of 4 your child will know how to operate a computer, maybe better than you can. Some say that this is dangerous and think that children should not be able to be on a computer until they are at least in the 5th grade. I think that if they are playing a game or something, and are with a parent, then it should be okay. If you do have a little one at home, the parent controls should be used on the computer to protect your child.

Also, now people are talking and texting on the cell phone while driving. If you are one of these people and think that it is okay, WRONG! How can anyone pay attention to the road if you're sending a text message. I have a feeling that within the next two years, cell phones will be banned while driving.

If you don't drive then you probably understand where I'm comming from. It's hard enough crossing the street when people are kinda paying attention. But when they're on the phone or sending a message, they might not see you. So, please for those of us who do are walking or ridding a bike across the street don't be on the phone.

I have a challenge for all of us. I challenge us to spend one whole day without cell phones, computers, playstions, PSPs, ect. See if your family can interact with each other without all the electronics that we have today. It is probably harder than you think, but it may be fun. Do you think you can do it?

Excellent points! The plastic surgeon who did Heidi Montag's work accidentally drove off a cliff the other day while texting to someone about his dog, who was in the car with him. Fortunately, at least the dog survived (with serious injuries though). Eeeps!

You raise a lot of important points here. Technology is a great tool, but its abuse/misuse comes with a price. Great read!
