Are We There Yet?

Ms. Rose Parks' courageous actions sing

Across this land, a gift for you and me.

Herculean was Martin Luther King

When he began to preach equality.

(Are we there yet?)

Black History Month is here again at last

And it's appropriate for me to ask

When we survey these fifty years just passed

Have we achieved the goals we took to task?

Toned down is hate and animosity

In general the races get along

Yet some folks harbor hearts with bigotry

And just don't see they've really got it wrong.

You see your neighbor who's next door is black

And so's the guy who lives across the street

And while there's really nothing that they lack

They live as though their lives are in defeat.

Discrimination's not a dead issue

The poor, the sick, those not in the mainstream

No matter who you are it could reach you

Though strides are great, we haven't reached the dream

Someday we'll say, "Black History Month? What for?"

And on that day we'll know for sure we're there

Our hearts to hatred will have shut the door

And each to everyone will say, "I care."
