Are Weddings the Cause of High Divorce Rates?

The Wedding Vs. The Marriage: Beware the Planning Process

Kenyatta Boone
It seems like lately everyone is getting married and then four months to a year later, they are divorced. First people should realize that a wedding can sometimes be overrated. All of that planning and running around like a chicken with your head cut off so that you can have the most perfect day ever seems a bit ridiculous. Weddings are the cause of high divorce rates.

The planning of the wedding actually begins the downward spiral. From the moment women start to plan the wedding is when the marriage is headed for disaster. Some women complain that their fiancés are not involved enough in the planning of the wedding and others complain when he is. This drives a wedge between the two of them. Finding men who care to give an opinion about the smallest of details is rare and should be welcomed by women.

Now the wedding day is what mostly drives a wedge between soon to be married couples. How you ask? This is the day that the women have dreamed about all their lives. Believing that this one day will be the best ever should raise flags. This statement alone is suspect and it is the problem. To say or think that this one day is the center of the marriage is the problem. The wedding day is not supposed to be the highlight of the relationship.

Women put too much emphasis on the wedding day and not enough time is dedicated to the marriage. Some women spend more time picking out a bridesmaid's dress color than they do communicating with their husbands.

This mentality of a fairytale wedding has got to stop. You should focus all of your energy into making your marriage a fairytale. Some brides to be think that if their wedding is a fairytale then the marriage will be one too. This is so untrue. Marriage requires a lot of hard work and communication.

Another reason weddings drive couples to divorce is because of finances. Some women want an extravagant and expensive wedding. This is great for those who can afford it, but for those who can't, it can be a very stressful time in a couples life once the honeymoon is over. Why would you want to start off a happy marriage with a load of debt? And everyone knows that financial issues are the number one reasons people get divorced. Instead of spending so much money on a wedding, it would be nice to use that money as a down payment on a house. So ladies, next time you are about to plan a wedding that costs more than you make in a year remember it just isn't worth it.
