Are You Willing to Pay $5 More to Help Starbucks Create Jobs?

Starbucks is Banking on the Community to Ease Unemployment

COMMENTARY | Are you willing to give an extra $5 each time you visit your local Starbucks? Starbucks is banking on its customers charitable spirit to help ease unemployment in the United States. According to Reuters, Starbucks, one of the nation's largest community-minded businesses, will on November 1 begin accepting donations online and in their cafes around the nation. The chain is corroborating with Opportunity Finance Network, an institution that provides credit to businesses in an effort to create Jobs across the USA.

Starbucks Chief Executive Officer Howard Schultz was quite optimistic when being interviewed online. He was quoted: "We're going to raise millions of dollars." However, he declined to give a specific number. Schultz felt his statement had solid backing because he believes in Americans helping Americans. He believes until people take steps and begin working to pull themselves out of the mess the government has created, there will be no resolution to Americas problem. Schultz stated waiting on Washington will never get America out of this mess.

In August, Schultz, asked executives across the country to boycott donating to any political campaigns in an effort to send a message to those in leadership positions encouraging them to solve the nation's budget woes. In September, he sent a letter to the president asking him to put all party issues aside in order to solve unemployment in this country. He states he realizes the problem and is no longer satisfied in sitting back waiting for others who are doing almost nothing.

According to plans, all donations received by Starbucks will be held in a special fund established at Opportunity Finance Network. Collected donations will be distributed across 180 community development institutions. Those institutions will provide credit to small businesses. These small business will be earmarked for loans when establishing new jobs or rehiring laid off employees.

Starbucks will open the account with an initial deposit of $5 million. Patrons donating will be given a red, white and blue wristband with one word inscribed, 'Indivisible', on the band. Starbucks has over 10,900 stores in the United States with 6800 of those stores collecting the donations.

I have never been one to fork over dough for starbucks. Only time is when I am given giftcards, but usually it goes to my hubby. I'd rather not get addicted to needing their coffee
