Are Wireless Video Game Controllers Really a Good Idea?

Lee Andrew Henderson
Every year all the video game consoles are trying to come up with new technology for their systems. Not too long ago they came up with the idea of a wireless video game controller.

I never owned a wireless controller on any previous systems because I've always just used the video game controller my console comes with. But when I bought an Xbox 360 earlier this year I discovered that it comes with a wireless controller.

At first I thought the wireless controller was a pretty cool concept. A wireless controller allows a person to sit anywhere in the room without having to worry about how far the cord reaches. A wireless video game controller is also a lot less messy. You no longer have to worry about leaving the cord on the floor and somebody tripping over it.

Sounds like a great idea right? Not so fast my friend.

Now that I have more responsibilities than I did back in my middle school and high school days I don't have as much time to play Xbox anymore. Most of my video game activities take place between 11 PM and 3 AM because I just don't have time during the day.

Do you know how frustrating it is to be playing a video game at 2 AM and have the battery of your wireless video game controller die? There are some 24-hour stores open but who really wants to go buy batteries at 2 AM?

One solution is rechargeable batteries. I do own some rechargeable batteries. In fact, I own eight rechargeable batteries, enough to fill two battery chargers. The only problem is when you live with somebody else you find that your battery chargers are constantly be unplugged and not plugged back in making your eight rechargeable batteries useless.

Let's also not forget that batteries are a fortune now, especially rechargeable ones. Last time I did actually go get batteries after midnight I had to pay $8 for two batteries.

As great as the wireless video game controller seems I prefer mine with a cord. I don't have a room big enough to even worry about the cord not reaching far enough and I don't mind getting up and putting my controller away so nobody trips on it, that's a whole lot easier than driving to a store at 2 AM to get new batteries.

I'm sure some people like having a wireless video game controller but some people don't. I don't see why video game consoles don't come with a video game controller with a cord like they always have and if somebody wants the wireless video game controller they can still buy it separate.

  • Wirless controllers will allow you to not worry about the cord.
  • Batteries die very often and are very expensive.
  • Video game consoles should come with controllers with a cord.
