Are Women More Skillful at Cheating Than Men?

Sandra Piddock
Let's get one thing straight. Both men and women can and do cheat, and some opinions may say that women are more skillful at cheating than men. However, I'd turn this argument around and say that it's not that women are more skillful at cheating than men. Men are less observant than women, and therefore less likely to pick up on the signs that their partner is cheating on them.

Think about it for a moment. If you're a woman, and your man is not paying as much attention to you as usual, or if he's suddenly starting to work late, you start to wonder why and you make it your mission to find out. You'll talk to him, you may ring him at work, or talk to his friends and family.

If you're really suspicious, you'll try to get a look at his mobile phone or credit card statements. No matter how jealously he guards them, he has to take a shower or go to sleep, and that's when you'll grab your opportunity to find out what's going on. If he's having an affair, you'll either find out through your detective work, or you'll wear him down with your constant questioning and the poor fellow will admit it just to get you off his back, not realising - bless him - that this is just the start of his problems.

Now, if you're a man and your wife is not as attentive as usual, and she seems to be going out more, what do you do? Search through her things for evidence? Follow her? Question her and her friends and family? Not unless your name happens to be Othello, you don't. In most cases, if a woman leaves her man to his own devices, he just enjoys the free time and settles down to watch the match or take his motorbike to bits.

If she's happy, he's happy, and that's why cheating women can usually cover their tracks better than cheating men, and why this may lead to the misconception that women are more skilfull at cheating than men. From my own experience, when I've heard about friends or acquaintances being caught out cheating - and this has happened with depressing regularity over the years - it's always been the man who has been found out.

This isn't to say the women are more faithful - far from it. When it comes to cheating women, the husbands have either remained in blissful ignorance, or they have found out about the affair when the wife decided that her lover was a better long term prospect and 'fessed up to the affair. If someone is determined to have an affair and to keep it secret, they will find a way to do it, whatever their gender. Women are no more skillful at cheating than men - we're just better at spotting the clues that our men are cheating.
