In case you didn't know lifting does not make you gain muscle, what it does is when your body is forced to do an intense work out it releases hormones that promote muscle building. The more intense the work out the more muscle you will build. You ultimately build muscle when you rest. Keeping this thought in the back of your mind when working out can help maximize your results.
You should do a intense workout with a very short pause inbetween sets to see the best results. When strength training, it isn't a bad thing to fail usually at the last set around the last 1-2 reps. By failing, this tells you that you are giving it your all and is excellent for building muscle mass. However, if you are failing halfway through the exercise I suggest lowering the weight. You will be surprised how much more of a workout it provides with a short break. I suggest no more than 1 minute for a break. Just remember to drink plenty of water and stretch before working out. Before working out you want to try something to get your heart rate up such as run on a treadmill for 5-10 min. This will warm up your muscles and get the blood flowing to them faster. This will not only let you do more reps, but will also decrease your chances of pulling a muscle or injurying yourself.
