Unlike other anxiety disorders which increase physiological activities such as your heart rate, worry actually supresses these activities. The common physical effects of worrying are:
Physical Effects of Worrying:
- Loss of appetite
- Headache
- Insomnia
- Digestive Problems
- Nausea
- Diarrhoea
- Somatic pains
Psychologial Effests of Worrying:
- Can't make a decision
- Feelings of helpnessness
- Panic attacks
- Difficulty concentrating on everyday tasks
- Lack of confidence
Worrying is something that we all do but is is how you respond to it that is vital. If you have an exagerrated sense of personal responsibility then you are more likely to worry incessantly. If your worry is disproportionate with regard to the possible outcome of events and your responsibility levels, then you need to realize that you are being hyper-sensitive and need to address this issue.
If you find that worrying is a problem in your life then instead of trying to supress this behavior the most effective action you can take is to acknowledge your worrying patterns and try to anchor yourself. Simply, try to focus on the rhythm of your breathing as you inhale and exhale and this one simple exercise can help you to break the grip of worry and relax.
When doing normal chores such as washing the dishes or preparing a report, try to focus on the current activity you are engaged in and process your attention level onto the task at hand. This leaves little time for you to worry about situations outside the task and is an easy introduction in training yourself not to worry. Stand back, observe your behavior and don't make a big deal out of it. Let go.
If you feel that there is no immediate solution and your worrying is intefering with your life, making you physically or psychologically ill, then you should go and talk to a professional about it. There are other things you can try e.g.,
- Self-help
- Avoid Caffeine
- Avoid Alcohol
- Take a long walk and switch off
- Learn to relax
- Try to get a good night's sleep
- Eat a high-fibre diet
- Eat regular means
- Try complementary therapies such as Aromatherapy, Reflexology or Acupuncture
Inner conflict and worrying can stop you leading a happy and fulfilled life. So, if you are not enjoying your life to the full due to worry it is time that you take action.
Why experience tension and worry when you can do something about it? Worrying can wear you out physically and mentally and can dominate your life if you allow it to continue. Both Eastern and Western practitioners can help people who live their lives dominated by worry.
