Arizona Historical Society Presents 'Meet Tucson's Pioneers'

Save the date! The Arizona Historical Society Docent Council will present a walking tour of Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday March 20, 2010. The tour features costumes characters of some of Tucson's early pioneers. You will visit their gravesites and hear fascinating stories of early Tucson history. Guests can chat with the historical interpreters during the break.

Some of the historical figures featured on this special tour are:

Maria Wakefield Fish: She married John Wasson, publisher of the local newspaper, who convinced her to teach school in Tucson. Her daughter was one of the first women students at U of A.

Mary (Mamie) Bernard Aguirre: After husband Epifanio Aguirre was killed by Indians, she became a teacher at a girl's school and later the Chair of the English & Spanish Dept at U of A.

Harold Steinfeld: Harold inherited his father's business and served on the board of the Consolidated Bank. Hear stories of how Speedway was named and the tragic fire at the Pioneer Hotel.

Thomas Hughes: Thomas fought in the Civil War. He was a farmer, postmaster of Tucson, and President of the Arizona Pioneers Historical Society.

Samuel Drachman: He served in the Civil War and owned the S. H. Drachman Cigar Store. Drachman School is named after him.

Dr. Nelson Bledsoe: Dr. Bledsoe first practiced medicine in Bisbee. He lived in Tucson from 1931 until he died in 1974. He was famous for removing bullets and operated the first x-ray machine in the territory.

Fred Boice: His family owned large tracts of land in CO, NM, and OK. They moved to AZ and purchased the Empire Ranch from the Vail family and several other properties.

Cordelia Lovell Manning: She married Levi Manning, a former Mayor and part owner of the Ice and Electric Company. Their mansion is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Evergreen Cemetery was founded in 1907 as a convenient location just outside of the Tucson city limits boundaries for new burial purposes. Many burials from Tucson's earlier cemeteries and Fort Lowell Cemetery were reinterred within Evergreen's spacious and manicured lawns.
