At age 30, Giffords became the younger woman ever to be elected to the House when she took office in 2006. She narrowly defeated her Tea Party opponent in the 2010 elections, and is generally regarded as a centrist Democrat.
Giffords is among several people who were shot at the event, and early reports of the seemingly random shooting in Tucson say that other persons were dead from gunshot wounds. Sources say also that one man is in custody in connection with the shooting.
Eyewitnesses on the scene have said that the gunman just ran up and began shooting randomly and at close range. Three of Gifford's aides were also shot. Early reports, which sometimes turn out to be wrong, say as many as fifteen people have been shot, indicating either large capacity magazines or multiple weapons. Attendees at the event say the gunman loudly shouted something to the assembly before he began shooting, but it is not known exactly what the man shouted.
Eyewitnesses have said that a child was among the victims of the shooter. The shooter himself was shot by security guards who responded to the tragic shooting, but is reported to be alive.

Post a Commentthe politicism over this tragedy has been ridiculous.
Such a tragic state of affairs. The shooter is obviously a very sick individual. Cheers for the reporting - and prayers for the families of those who were killed or wounded.
Yes I heard on the radio this afternoon that she was dead, and then an hour later that the doctor was optimistic after her surgery. So good early reporting on your part! Apparently somebody found a website or YouTube or MySpace bit about the shooter; he listed his favorite books as Mein Kompf and the Communist Manifesto. Apparently somebody took all his stuff down. Somebody wanted to implicate the Tea Party in this -- but those are definitely not their favorite books.
Thanks for your vote of confidence. However, I've had to revise the title to say that Gabrielle G is now reported to be alive and in critical condition at the hospital. Early reports had, in fact, been based on more than one source but, in some cases, it takes a doctor to say definitively whether a person is alive or not-especially with life support mechanism. We pray that she is alive and can recover .
Thanks for the report. It's the best early reporting that I have found with any details or length.
