Arkansas and Tommy Tuberville NOT the Right Fit

Why Tommy Should Stay Where He Is

Hunter Snider
Whoever or whatever is reporting that Tommy Tuberville might be thinking of leaving Auburn for Arkansas must be insane. God, I hope it is not Tuberville, although it might be for reasons I will explain later.

Arkansas has nothing for Tuberville. While expectations are high at Auburn they are unreasonable at Arkansas. Instead of having to beat Alabama every year, he will have to beat (if he were to take the Arkansas job) Alabama, Auburn and LSU every year so the alumni and admins will be happy. Coach Nutt beat LSU, the probable national champion, and still felt he had to leave while the gettin' was good.

There is a 99.9 percent Darren McFadden will leave at the end of this season (Coach Nutt is gone and the money/injury lure will be too much). Darren is one of the top 5 players in the country and a one of a kind player - Tuberville will not be able to replace him with just another running back. Beat Auburn, Arkansas and LSU with no more McFadden? Nearly impossible but, that is what they (the alumni and admins) will expect.

The verbal commitments (recruits) for Auburn are rated higher than the commitments for Arkansas (see http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/clubhouse?teamId=2). So, potentially, Coach Tuberville has a better team next year while it is almost assured that Arkansas will have a worse one with the loss of McFadden. Philosophy wise Arkansas are Coach Nutt's recruits and team, they are probably not set up for the type of offense that Tuberville will bring (i.e. more passing than running). Auburn, of course, is his team with his recruits, probably set up the way he wants it.

There is pressure for him to perform at Auburn but the school seems interested in retaining him. There are numerous reports out of Auburn that they are trying to make a deal with him (see http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=313190). While Arkansas seems to be dismissing him as a candidate, in the media anyway (see http://www.nwanews.com/nwat/Sports/59733/). If it were me I would go or stay where the people wanted me.

I know some people like a challenge, some what to relieve some pressure and some just want a change of scenery when taking a new job. I hope that Tuberville is not one of those types of people. I do not foresee him being successful at Arkansas for the reasons above so he should just stay where he is at. At least until a better job comes along.

So why is this rumor out there? Well, Coach Tuberville has not yet signed that extension with Auburn and may be playing them for more money/years. At least that is what I think.

Again Arkansas has nothing for Coach Tuberville.

Arkansas has a lot to offer any coach except maybe the handful who have safe jobs where they make million$. As another pointed out earlier, the won-loss record had very little to do with Nutt leaving, although that should have been better also. He left bc of abuse of power with a close friend of his family sending hateful emails to players he wanted gone. Trainers and equipment managers would hassle them also bc he didn't have the "nutts" to just tell them to transfer. If you think Auburn is a better program, you are sadly mistaken. With a REAL coach, this team would have been in a BCS Bowl the last 2 years, if not the NC. Don't believe me? Check the NFL draft the last 2 years and see how many Hogs were/are taken.

I should have put in my article that I believe that Tuberville needs to leave Auburn but Arkansas not the place for him. He should find something better for himself (probably outside the SEC) before leaving a pretty good job at Auburn. And for those of you wanting to dump him - who are you going to get? Better have someone good lined up or the program could end up going backward i.e. Callahan and Weiss.

That would be "an idiot" David. He was on the coaching staff at Miami he didn't call the shots. And besides that, records aren't everything. But I know this, next year when our freshman quarter back has a hard time connecting to his team because dumb dumb left Cox in all season and barely let burns have any playing time, he will be sorry. No i take that back, he's too stupid to realize how his tunnel vision affected the team. Cox better hold onto that game ball from Bama cause that will be the only football that boy gets to touch after this year!

AU Grad you are a idiot!! Tuberville has done nothing but produce wins for Auburn. There is a reason why his name is in the pot at almost every coaching job in the country b/c he is a very good coach. He knows what it takes to be a part of a winning program from his days at Miami (the U as some call it) from '86-'93 ('87 '89 '91 nat champs). I think Auburn has one of the best records of any team in the country over the past 4 years. Tubberville played Brandon Cox b/c he was a good game manager. i will say he did have his fair share of bad games but i also think with a freshman as the next best thing we were pro better off with Cox. Kodi Burns will be a great player for Auburn he def has all the talent in the world but he is still a freshman. Please don't be stupid AU Grad. WAR EAGLE!!!

I'm confused. It's great Arky beat LSU, but, LSU is far from the eventual National Champion, at this point. Also, why would expectations be high at Arkansas, much less higher than programs like Auburn and Bama? They haven't won a NC in 43 years, a conference championship in 18, or ever won one in their current conference. I agree that a move to Arky wouldn't be a good one; but not because of expectations... I'd say the opposite is true (Arky couldn't possibly expect more than programs who've won the SEC several times since Arky joined). It's not even a lateral move, but a step backwards. He's likely considering the move because of unrealistic expectations of AU alumni and fans, in the first place. Most have an overblown perception of their station in the SEC; and their expectations are only exceeded by those of Bama fans. The difference is that Bama fans have a reason to expect greatness... they're accustomed to it. Personally, I don't even think TuberVile is a good coach; and he's an

    Mr. Curts,

You as well as many other people outside of the State of Arkansas have a major misconception about the fans in this state. We don't expect to win every game, and we certainly don't expect to be on top season after season. After all, this is the SEC. However, we do expect to have a coach who actually knows what he is doing and does not get out coached consistently.

Sure, we had some great games/wins the past couple of years, but Nutt's play calling was absolutely horrific. And predictable at that. We beat LSU this year in spite of some of the terrible decisions that Nutt made. If you want a prime example of a bad call, look at the Alabama/Arkansas game from earlier this season. Toward the end of the game, Arkansas had the ball on 3rd and 12. Instead of running out the clock (as any smart coach would probably do, considering our field position at the time) Nutt allowed our mediocre quarterback to throw the ball which stopped the clock. We had the lead, but eve

"AU GRAD"...you are making the "real" Auburn graduates look bad. "Pat Die"? It's DYE, Sir. Also, "loose" key games? Please install a spell checker.

Actually, I don't find it shocking at all that he would want to bolt from Auburn to Arkansas. He probably is still peeved over the coup to replace him with Petrino a few years ago. That was botched beyond belief. Plus, Auburn will always be second fiddle to Alabama in that state, no matter the recent on-field success. Furthermore, he has made upgrading the facilities there a priority. That is not a problem at Arkanas. They already have a rennovated stadium with a massive weight room and indoor training facility...the very things he is begging for from Auburn. Sure, fans in Arkansas road Nutt out of town while he was winning, but he should have been fired two years ago after consecutive losing seasons. Also, don't underestimate the devisiveness that Nutt himself created with the Mustain/Malzahn debacle. Nutt was his own worst enemy these past few years and everybody was ready to see him go, regardless of on-field results.
