UPDATE: Police Confirm Man Killed Himself in Fargo, North Dakota
I was driving down 25th Street earlier that evening when I noticed the yellow police tape near the corner of Main Avenue and 25th Street. I thought it was kind of odd, but didn't think much of it.
Later, I found out that there had been a standoff in that exact area. This area also happens to be very near that place where I work, which is kind of scary. Businesses were told to close so, if I had been working yesterday, we would have had to shut down and I would have had to leave work.
Apparently, this man first approached a police officer during a routine traffic assist between 12:20 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. yesterday. The man told this police officer that he was planning on taking his own life. He then pulled out a pistol and proceeded to walk across Main Avenue.
The situation escalated as armed police officers attempted to talk him out of it. The unidentified man subsequently shot himself in the head with the pistol. Police are saying the man is "seriously" wounded but other media are saying he is dead. He was attended to by members of F-M Ambulance, but was not rushed to the hospital.
The man may or may not have been dangerous to the Fargo community but, either way, I never imagined something like this could happen so close to home. If it had been a week day, I would have been at work during the time this was happening.
The roads were blocked during this 30-minute incident, but what a horrible thing to do. How could someone do something so gruesome in a public place like that? If I had happened to be in the area when a man shot himself in the head, I would have been traumatized.
To do something so drastic, this unidentified man was obviously a very troubled person. If he is somehow, miraculously, alive still, I hope he gets the help he obviously needs.
