Armstrong Atlantic State University Review

Jenny Thomas
I was admitted to Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia as a transfer student, so I have had a taste of what other schools can be like. Overall, my years at Armstrong have been marvelous, but every school has its flaws. To be quite honest, the financial aid office will be atrocious no matter where you roam- I am pretty sure this is written in stone somewhere. Still, that does not mean that the rest of your college experience needs to be mind numbingly painful.

Armstrong is not particularly competitive about admissions. Still, this is no excuse to slack off on the application. A lot of the students are local, but there are opportunities for scholarships and research that simply will not fall into the laps of people who are not willing to work for it. So, start early: do not look at the averages and try to meet them. Being average might get a degree, but you will miss out on so many of the experiences that really help with planning a future.

For the most part, professors at Armstrong are excellent. Bad apples happen, but that does not mean that your college experience and your GPA are ruined. Many of the departments have resources to help students that need a bit of a boost, and some even have their own tutoring system. In my experience, the professors at Armstrong have gone above and beyond (WELL beyond) what their overworked and underpaid jobs require. They will not hold your hand, but they will help.

The campus itself is small. A leisurely stroll from one corner to another takes little time, but you are likely to run into some construction that will force a detour. There is always something being built on campus, and it is a bit upsetting when the state of some of the other buildings and the older dorms are taken into consideration. Even worse, the newly built dorms (opened Fall 2010) are already experiencing issues brought on by a swift and careless construction. The building looks pretty, but the design itself has many flaws. The new Student Union is a nice facility, but much of it seems very unnecessary. The question of what to do with the old rooms and buildings that were in use before the construction of the Student Union is still being asked.

There are a wide variety of majors to choose from, but the graduate programs are lacking. We have many clubs and organizations, but the religious and Greek organizations are frequently over-represented at functions. Also, some clubs experience semesters (or years) of inactivity, but all it takes is someone willing to revive them.

While this may read like a harsh criticism, Armstrong really does have its perks. If an affordable education with excellent instruction in one of many fields is your goal, Armstrong Atlantic State University might be the way to go.
