Armstrong's Global Fight Against Cancer

Lance Armstrong the cancer surviving pro cycler who won the Tour De France 7 consecutive times and founder of the Lance Armstrong Foundation has called for a Global Cancer Campaign. Lance Armstrong began this campaign by making his comeback to pro cycling which began in Australia, with the Tour of Australia cycling race.

On the Lance Armstrong Foundation Website he writes this, "movement that will take cancer from isolation to collaboration." Lance Armstrong through his foundation and fame on the bike is trying to unite the world against cancer to defeat this deadly illness. This call for the world to come together for a common cause in helping one another reminded me of the graphic novel turned movie, "The Watchmen." With out giving giving away the whole movie for those of you who have not seen it or read the graphic novel yet one of the characters saves the humane race from destroying themselves by uniting them in a common fight against a common enemy.

Imagine if lance Armstrong could unite the countries that make up the world today in a common fight against cancer. What if the countries of the world spent less energy fighting each other and more energy fighting common enemies to the humane race such as cancer.

Unfortunately I do not see this happening anytime soon, and I only wish Lances campaign could achieve this. But imagine for a second if we did actually stop fighting each other how much more time and money we could spend in fighting not only cancer but other illnesses. How many lives could we save?

I may not see Lance uniting the whole world to a point that they will drop all their weapons, to fight a common enemy named cancer but he still is accomplishing a huge step in the fight against cancer. Riding in races around the world on his custom llivestrong bike, which has the number of people who were diagnosed with cancer written on it who were diagnosed in the short time he was retired. Some may say he is secretly wanting to win the tour De France again and break the record of being the oldest person to win the Tour and maybe he is. But unlike all the other riders who are out racing around the world, Lance is working off the bike as well on on the bike. When a race is over and the other riders are celebrating their great rides, lance puts on his suit and talks to world diplomats to get them in on the fight against cancer. Off the bike in between making a come back to Pro cycling Lance has met with Mexican leaders discussing cancer, planned a world cancer summit in Ireland, fought for a smoke free Texas, and met with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd who after Armstrong finished the Tour of Australia race pledged $5.6 million in funding cancer research.

Lance is using his skills on the bike to raise money and awareness in the global fight against cancer, its his determination and strength on and off the bike that inspires the world to follow in his footsteps. Uniting together we can make a difference in the fight against cancer.
