Roxy and Pamela take their kids to sing a concert at the Hartnett House which is a nursing home. They are told they can not go in because there is no room for them because it is packed inside. Two residents come out and sit across from Pamela and Roxy. They introduce themselves as Elsie and Virginia. They start to tell the story what life was like in Ft. Marshall for them back in the summer of 1943.

Originally Elsie and Virginia didn't like each other when they first met at a USO dance. There was a confrontation outside of the dance with a drunk, that was leaning against her friend Calvin's car, punches got thrown and Virginia yelled at the drunk that he should respect him for he is in the Armed Forces. The drunk threatens Calvin and tells him that he is dead. It is at this moment that Elsie and Virginia become friends.

Elsie met Paul , a soldier at the dance when she accidentally bumped into him while dancing with someone else. She falls totally in love with him and goes to her cousin Lorraines's work who is also married to a soldier, named Warren to tell her that she is afraid Paul doesn't love her.

Lorraine tells Elsie that maybe he is just trying to spare here from being away for two years at a time. Paul walks in to the shipyard tells Elsie he has to talk to her, and he gets on his knees and proposes. They plan a wedding for that weekend for he is to be leaving soon.

The girls all have a beach party where they pose as pin up girls so that their men will have photos of them to look at when they are away.

Elsie and Paul's wedding are at their friend's Dale's roadhouse, Virginia is sad because her husband will be leaving, he assures her , promises her that he's coming home, that they all are coming home.

Elsie was a bride for less than a week when Paul left to England to fight the Germans. She couldn't stand being away from him so she joined the Red Cross so she could see him.

Back at Fort Marshall Warren is back he got hurt in the war and is in a wheelchair. Lorraine stands by him and tells him that she will never leave him.

Back at the roadhouse, the drunk comes in and starts laughing at Warren because he is in a wheelchair. The drunk pushes Warren, and Warren falls to the ground. Dale gets upset and goes after the drunk, Dale is stabbed in the stomach during this fight and dies.

Hazel, Dale's wife who is a pilot doesn't take his death well and quits her job to run the roadhouse. The girls convince her that this is not what Dale would want for her, so she decides to sell the bar.

As they are telling this story she talks about the people who bought the roadhouse and how their daughter Betty was the cutest kid and how they named the bar The Hump Bar, Roxy can't believe it and tells them I own that bar and I knew Betty.

Elsie ends up back to Fort Marshall, pregnant. They are all at the Hump Bar when a knock comes at the door. Virginia tells them we are closed and the knocks keep coming. When she opens the door a soldier hands her a letter and says I am so sorry. Virginia starts crying and reads the letter and says it's not for me and turns around and looks at Elsie.

Elsie starts screaming it's not true and falls to the ground with everyone around her and starts to go into labor.

She had her son the night her husband died.

Elsie talks about the memorial service they had in the park, and the stone they had placed where they all first met.

After the concert Pamela's and Roxy's kids come out and want to go home. They ask if they can come back and visit sometime. A man walks in and brings chocolates to the two old ladies and she introduces her son Paul Jr. to them.

After they get back home, Pamela and Roxy tell the story to their friends. Claudia Joy, Roland, Denise, Pamela and Roxy go to see if they can find the stone of Paul's in the park. They find it under tall grass , and the tree that was planted in his memory. Roxy says We were not the first group of Army Wives to come together.
