Arnold Select Sandwich Thins - Product Review

Morgan Summerfield
I like bread! I grew up on a farm and there were always fresh made breads, rolls, biscuits and all their yeasty, carb filled cousins on the table for every meal. We needed carbs because there was plenty of physical labor to be performed. Well, I don't live on the farm anymore, my lifestyle has changed and bread-in its many forms-had become my enemy. Bread was contributing to my weight gain and I had to find a better way. I went in search of a 'bread' that would fit with my new weight loss and health objectives, because I didn't want to give it up all together. When I started reading packages, I was a bit dismayed by what I was finding in the way of calories, carbs, sugars and ingredients. When I tried some of the products, I was not impressed. They tasted like cardboard and didn't satisfy my carb desires. Then, I tried Arnold Select Sandwich Thins™.

When I first picked up the package of Arnold Select Sandwich Thins™ Multi-Grain, I was put off by how thin they were. How could anything that small be in any way satisfying? Then there was the issue of how "healthy" they looked-bits of whole grain showing through. We are so used to that smooth texture. More cardboard flavor?

When I brought it home, I wasn't expecting much. However, I was pleasantly surprised. There is flavor and texture and they satisfy the "I need carbs" craving. With only 100 calories per roll, only 10 of these calories from fat, no trans or saturated fat and containing 20% of the daily recommended value of dietary fiber, I was happy. They are great toasted, make a nice sandwich, and are a good bun for a lean hamburger or a grilled veggie patty.

Arnold Select Sandwich Thins™ come in whole wheat, whole grain white, seedless rye and multi-grain. I personally prefer the multi-grain for the added texture. (See how fast I got over that smooth thing!) I won't tell you they are as good as a fresh backed yeast roll served up at Sunday dinner, but they are definitely better from a health perspective and allow me my carbs without guilt.

Local Tip: If you live on the south side of Atlanta, Georgia, you can save some money by buying Nature's Own Version of this product at Flowers Bakery Thrift Store located at 6685 Highway 85, Riverdale, Georgia. I have picked them up at two 8-packs for $1.00! I believe Arnold Select Sandwich Thinsare the better tasting product, but in this economy sometimes compromise is required.
