Aromatherapy and Essential Oils for Dogs
An Essential Oil Starter Kit to Help Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy
What is an essential oil?
Essential oils are the pure essence or "blood" of the plant. It can take thousands of pounds of a particular plant to generate just one ounce of essential oil. It is important not to confuse essential oils with perfume oils.
Are essential oils safe to use?
Essential oils are safe to use when used correctly. Have you ever used a product containing Citronella or Eucalyptus? Both Citronella and Eucalyptus are essential oils. When using essential oils there are a few "rules" to follow:
Don't mix oils - Before mixing oils you need to read each label for contraindications and warnings, even then it would be wise to not mix without first researching each oil. It is easier to buy pre-made combinations.
Don't apply oils on or near eyes and mucous membranes - Essential oils are meant to be used topically or inhaled. When applying topically, unless applying to a wound or as directed, the essential oil should be placed behind the ears where the dog can not lick the oils.
Don't use water to wash oils from inappropriate placement - Water will only exacerbate the oils; instead use vegetable oil on a cotton ball or q-tip.
What essential oils should be in my starter kit?
Eucalyptus - An inhalation of Eucalyptus can help soothe congestion from respiratory disorders.
Frankincense - An inhalation of Frankincense can help boost the immune system. Used topically Frankincense can help with tumors and warts.
Lavender - Topically Lavender can be used to treat minor cuts and burns. An inhalation Lavender has a calming effect.
Oregano - Oregano has powerful antibacterial effects when used as an inhalation. Oregano can even help tough infections like Staph.
Lemon - A great alternative to Citronella, Lemon repels many bugs. Use topically in a few strategic spots to keep Fido bug free.
Niaouil - Niaouil is a great alternative to Tea Tree. Niaouil is gentler then Tea Tree and can be used topically for skin allergies or use in the ears to heal ear infections.
Peppermint - Is unique in that it is one of the few essential oils that can be used internally. Used internally peppermint helps prevent nausea and motion sickness. Mix peppermint with equal amount of carrier oil and dab where the dog WILL lick. Peppermint can also be used topically as a bug repellent or for dogs that are sluggish.
