Arques Avenue at Wolfe Road in Sunnyvale: Watch that Red Light!

k. ferguson
Do you commute on Arques Avenue, in Sunnyvale, a lot? If so, then I need to warn you about a potential ticket you might collect! I drive this section of road quite frequently, but still forget the special signage they have in place at this intersection.

In order to turn right from Arques Ave onto Wolfe Rd, you need to stop and stay in place until the light turns green. At normal intersections, even if the light is red, you can turn right if it is safe to do so. Not at Arques and Wolfe! There are two signs that remind you to not turn on the red. The intersection is very large and you could sneak by if you wanted to chance it. I just drove this again today, and I forgot again. I caught myself before I got too far, and there was a police car waiting for someone, like me, to roll right through. The guy who was in front of me did not stop, and I bet by the time the cop was done with him, he will never do it again.

The two signs are in full view and are hard to miss. One is on the right hand side, right under the red light on the corner, and the other is on the actual signal pole across the intersection. If you get pulled over, there is no excuse about not seeing the signs. Also keep in mind that as you sit waiting for the light to change, there is a fire station to the left of you.

If you travel this route, then you know that it is easy to 'run' this right-turn light. This road is an exit off of Central Expressway, and if you are not paying attention, you will get a hefty fine. Some red light tickets can cost you upwards of $400. Not to mention the added point to your driving record and the increase in your car insurance. There is a lot at stake for not stopping and obeying the signs. Don't forget the cost and inconvenience of traffic school.

I feel that I need to warn everyone who travels through that intersection to remember about the special signage and to heed it's warning. It is a very safe intersection in a great part of town, but don't get distracted by the scenery and wind up with an expensive ticket. Take the extra time and keep your driving record clean. See you on the road!
