A multimedia writer is always informed about what new is happening in the field. This industry changes rapidly and you have to keep up with what is going on. If this is something that you'd like to do, you have to be prepared to put in some long hours. Typical hours that a multimedia writer works are sixty to seventy hour work weeks. Although it is hard, sometimes there may not be any work to do at all. It is best to look for other jobs while you have one to have steady work.
The general salary for multimedia writers and editors is $42,790, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook in 2002. Also during that year, 319,000 writers and editors were employed. The job outlook is pretty good as it keeps growing by the year.
The only training you would need to be a multimedia writer would be to take some writing courses. Many colleges have these type of courses. What you should take would be computer classes, journalism classes, and multimedia classes. To be a multimedia writer, you really have to have excellent writing skills. Experience is something else that is needed in this field. It is not hard to get experience.
If you are into computer games, then play as many adventure games that you can. If you are interested in educational types of programs, then go and find as many of those as you can. Don't just pick the flavor-of-the-month title, play them all! If you are a writer and want to cross over into this area, you can. If you write news, then you can try to enter a company's marketing department for work. If you are a freelance writer, one way you can get in the field is to know as much as you can about computers, writing and games. The best thing to do above all, is to know as much as you can about the area that you want to work in.
