Art Galleries in Long Island, New York

Long Island is a famous neighborhood of New York City. It also has more art galleries per square mile than anywhere else in New York, other than Manhattan. That's why, if you visit New York and love art, you should head to Long Island and check out the art galleries there.

P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center is Long Island's most famous art institutions. With amazing exhibits, often of experimental and innovative art, architecture installations, solo and group shows, and an affiliation with MOMA, this is the place to visit. It even has its own internet radio station. Open Thursday to Monday, admission is $5 and $2 for students and seniors. 22-25 Jackson Avenue, 46th Avenue and 21st Street, Long Island City, NY 11101, 718-784-2084

The Noguchi Museum is famous for its rock garden and is home to the work of Isamu Noguchi, the famous Japanese American artist and landscape architect. The museum, located in a converted factory, has 13 galleries and showcases works in stone, wood, clay and more. Closed Monday and Tuesday, Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. 9-01 33rd Road (at Vernon Boulevard), Long Island City, NY, 718.204.7088

B.J. Spoke Gallery is a cooperative owned by its members. It showcases emerging artists and established artists of all disciplines, has a juried show, and even offers lectures by guest speakers. Upcoming shows include a Celebration of Long Island and a National Photography Show. Open Tuesday through Sunday. 299 Main Street, Huntington, NY 631-549-5106

Fisher Landau Center for Art is a gallery centered on contemporary art, including such famous artists as Jasper Johns. It's appeal is not only its work but that its also almost a secret so, when you go, you may even have the place completely to yourself. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Admission free. 38-27 30th Street, Long Island City, NY 718-937-0727

Also check out the Jade Nectar Gallery for pop art, the Sculpture Center for contemporary sculptors, Allison Corey Fine Art for the work of many international artists, Meisner Gallery for acrylic casting and Gallery North for Long Island art and crafts.
