Missy Slink
Enjoying art in its various forms is a leisure activity that many of us wish we had more time for. From listening to music in coffee shops, to taking an evening out to enjoy an opera, to perusing a painting gallery, the different forms that artistry takes seem to offer just about something for everyone. Fortunately for those who live in or around the Tulsa, Oklahoma area, enjoying the various forms of art is something that their surroundings readily offer them. Here is a list of some of the great artistic opportunities for artists and art appreciators in Tulsa, Oklahoma to participate in and enjoy.

1) Art on Main: Occurring one October weekend a year, Art on Main is an annual event in Jenks, Oklahoma-located right outside of the regular Tulsa city area. Jenks' annual art festival includes everything from wood sculptures carvings to painting, photography, glass work, jewelry, and more. Held on historic Jenks' main street, artists participating in this event have the option of selling or simply displaying their work. The day event typically lasts all day, from 10am-6pm of the designated Saturday.

2) Philbrook Museum of Art: Located in the beautiful Philbrook mansion, this world class art museum offers exhibits from renowned artists of all eras. The grounds for this art museum are especially beautiful, with blooming flowers in the springtime and Christmas lights for the holiday season. Admission is free for students, but a general admission fee is required for other museum visitors. Exhibitions include both Native American artwork and European pieces, among other displays.

3) Art in the Square: Similar in concept to Jenk's Art on Main, Art in the Square is also held on a Saturday in October every year. Held in the classy environment of downtown Tulsa's Utica Square, Art in the Square offers exhibitions by more than 90 local artists who are both displaying and selling their artwork. Forms of artwork include, but are not limited to, pottery, stained glass, sculpture, and watercolors. According to the Utica Square website, Art in the Square is an event that "celebrates art and the art of shopping."

4) Gilcrease Museum of the Americas: Perfect for the lover of the American Wild West, the Gilcrease Museum is full of displays of art and artifacts from the time when the "buffalo roamed." With works from famous artists such as Frederick Remington and many Native American artists, this museum offers visitors a glimpse into the past of the Oklahoma area.

5) Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art: Offering both travelling and permanent collections of artwork by Jewish artists, this educational art museum is full of paintings from all different time periods, offering a great cultural experience for all its visitors.

In addition to these great events and museums, Tulsa, Oklahoma also offers many other opportunities to enjoy other forms of art. From the Tulsa Opera, to the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra to the Tulsa Ballet, the forms of performing art in this Midwest town are certainly worth enjoying for an evening out.
