Art is often in danger of winding up on the chopping block when it comes time to cut programs from Palo Alto Schools. There are those who work hard, however, to preserve the arts because they know that it isn't "just" about making a clay pot to take home, or picture to hang on the wall. Of course that is reason enough because it allows kids to be creative--but there are more benefits to art that are often unspoken.

Some of our savvy administrators also know art opens the minds of our students to enlarge their critical thinking skills. Art helps students become more adept with language skills. It also helps a child to be more aware of the world around them. That is why our schools are teaming up with the Palo Alto Art center for special school tours for "Project Look!"

The importance behind the experience relies on what they call, "Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS"). According to Project Look! The method focuses on certain pieces of art that will engage students to think critically about the work. After that, they will engage in a fun and age appropriate "hands-on activity".

If your class hasn't signed up for a tour there is still time. The program will run until December 17, 2010.
