You don't have to be anywhere near the masters to pick up a paintbrush and paint. Many people give up before they just relax, don't try to make a masterpiece and just enjoy themselves. The trick is simple, just let go and let your hands paint. This can be an amazing stress reliever.
Art therapy is a recognized treatment, it's ability to help people has be known for a long time now. Visualizing and letting your pain and stress go through you and into the art medium is a true healing process. You are letting go of your pain, letting it go into your canvas and away from inside yourself.
It has been used to help children and adults work through severe emotional traumas, and is used to help autistic children. Although, you don't need to have gone through nearly as much to benefit from the healing and distressing brought about by art and creating.
Art is one of the things that most people can truly appreciate, when you look a piece of art you are also looking into the artists life and emotions at the time. Everything about the paintings can be a clue, from the brush strokes to the colors used.
There is no "right" or "wrong" way to paint, just let go- don't worry about creating the "next big thing". Paint for yourself, and just relax and don't worry about being judged. Let it all go, and just let your subconscious take over.
All the tools you need are paper or canvas, paint, a couple of brushed and yourself. All these things are readily available and inexpensive. There is no reason to go out and have to purchase $50 brushes and the $100 canvas. Everything you need can be easily found in a local store and your set and on your way.
When you paint, just try to visualize your pain going through you and into the paint, and onto the canvas. Letting go can be painful, but it is worth it. Don't let the outside world get to you while you paint, there's no need to add to your stress. Simply setting aside even five minutes to doodle can be healing.
So, try something new, create and let go of your stress!
