Article Ideas to Capitalize on Lonely Days

Spend Your Time Wisely

J Gorman
We all have days in which our plans go awry, and we left by ourselves with nothing to do. Follow these tips for suggested activities, but remember to keep a pen and paper with you to document your travels.
  • Go somewhere nearby that you have never been, but that you have always thought about visiting.
Keep a notebook with you and pretend to be traveling as a writer covering strange adventures.

If you are interesting in society, use public transportation and take note of oddities or any behavior you witness that causes you to think. Social commentaries make great articles, but the best research is to immerse yourself in the general public.

  • Act as a tourist in a local place.
Most towns have typical places that draw tourists. Pretend to be drawn to those places as an outsider. You will begin to see your own town in a different way, and it would be interesting to document these variations in attitude.
  • Scour the movie listings.
Attend the playing of a newly released film. Be a film critic and keep notes. But be careful not to be too critical if it is your first viewing. Most filmies believe one must watch a movie for at least three times before offering an opinion on it.
  • Visit an art museum.
It might be a good idea to try your hand at painting before you go, and then again when you return. Observe any disparities in technique and write about your experience. Was there one painting in particular that is still in your mind? Go back and look at it more closely, then break it apart in order to write an opinion on the artist's intent.
  • Watch CNN.
There is so much happening every day that could inspire great opinion/commentary pieces. CNN is a pretty neutral source for news information and they conduct many interviews daily. Write down quotes that stand out to you and determine your feelings about the issue being discussed.
  • Watch the History Channel.
The History Channel is a wonderful source of intriguing information. Check the listings to find a topic that interests you. Write an educational article detailing the subject. Chances are other are equally fascinated.

The above is a start to a seemingly lonely day that could prove to be successful. Make sure your thoughts are detailed enough for you to return to the feelings when transforming the comments into an article.
