Susan G. Komen Foundation Quits Planned Parenthood Partnership

Alethea Pape
On Jan. 31, the Associated Press reported that the Susan G. Komen Foundation has ended funding given to Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The breast cancer research charity and the women's health care organization began a partnership in 2005. The grants allowed Planned Parenthood to provide breast cancer education and screenings to rural and low-income communities.

Was the ending of funding due to pressure from political and special interest groups? Planned Parenthood has suggested on its website that the cancellation of funding was due to pressure from anti-abortion groups. No reports of anti-abortion activity against the Susan G. Komen Foundation were noted but, Americans United For Life, a pro-life website, announced its support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation's decision to end its affiliation with Planned Parenthood.

On September 15, 2011, Rep. Cliff Stearns, (R-Fla.) began an inquiry of Planned Parenthood to investigate if "public money was spent by the organization on abortions which is against regulations of the government." The inquiry, described on the National Partnership website, under the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations asked president Cecile Richard for an internal audit of the government money spent and the affiliations from the past 20 years. It would seem that if an organization is under scrutiny and affiliations with that organization are being questioned, then these affiliations may want to distance themselves from the organization in question. This seems like a transparent political move by Rep. Stearns.

The Susan G. Komen foundation began in 1982 and has raised "more than $1.9 billion since its grassroots beginning". The money has been used for breast cancer research. It holds fundraisers like the popular Race for the Cure.

Planned Parenthood will still provide healthcare to women and girls without resources. Planned Parenthood Federation of America announced on its website on January 31, it now has an emerging donation, the Breast Health Emergency Fund started by a $250,000 grant from the Amy and Lee Fikes Foundation.

Whether or not the decision by the Susan G. Komen Foundation director, Tami Thompson, was based on a political move, it ended a financial partnership that has given $680,000 in 2011 and $580,000 in 2010 to help underfunded communities receive health care.

Tough decisions sometimes need to be made to sustain an organization. If the Susan G. Komen Foundation was fearful of being connected with the Planned Parenthood organization while under a congressional inquiry and if the foundation was fearful of backlash from anti-abortionists, then special interest groups may have succeeded in preventing some communities from receiving adequate health care.

The younger generation is MORE Pro-life than their parents because new technology proves life exists in the womb, and these kids/young adults are realizing the pain of losing their siblings because of the lies of PP. 55 million babies have been murdered since Roe v Wade. These persons would've been siblings, friends, spouses, leaders, discoverers of cures including CANCER, taxpayers and ultimately sons/daughters/grandchildren. How is relieving PP Komen's $$ hurting PP? PP has been closing many clinics because PEOPLE are not going there anymore. People are becoming Pro-life. But ultimately PP has murdered future constituents because they killed them in the womb. Abortion is on its way out. Women have been hurt long enough over abortions. If women want to help women, then don't kill them in the womb, and turn their backs on women in crisis. Abortion is the only option as a solution to women’s problems in PP. Pro-life organizations offers many more options--healing, help, aid, protection, happiness, adoption, LOVE.
If you're pregnant and scared, there is help. 1-800-848-LOVE

This is a tragic situation. Thank you for the fine job reporting and analyzing it! Non profits should not get in the middle when he fine work an organization does is politicized. Hopefully the public will help make up for the shortfall.
