Artist of the Day: Motion City Soundtrack

A Mid-Way Famous Group Provides Pop and Rock for Its Loyal Listeners

Jim Kelly
I first heard of Motion City Soundtrack watching music videos on MTV one Saturday morning. I heard the song "Everything is Alright" and immediately went to FYE and bought their album. Not only did I listen to that song over and over for the next few weeks, I was surprised and happy to find out that the rest of their album was nothing short of phenomenal as well. I went into great research to find more albums by this band and have found that they are one of my favorite bands around today. Not a lot is mentioned of them, but when they have a break out radio hit, they will be on everyone's iPod's for years to come.

The band consists of Justin Pierre, Joshua Cain, Jesse Johnson, Matthew Taylor, and Tony Thaxton. Pierre is the lead vocalist and is often critically acclaimed for his singing style and masterful lyrics. The rest of the group, outside of original member Cain, has joined periodically over the years.

To this point they've put out three studio albums, I Am The Movie, Commit This To Memory, and Even If It Kills Me. They are currently set to release their fourth studio album, My Dinosaur Life, in 2010.

Here are some notable songs from each album that are worth listening too:

I Am The Movie: Their earliest release also features some of their best songs. Listen to, "The Future Freaks Me Out" and "My Favorite Accident." These catchy tunes will have you begging for more.

Commit This To Memory: Their breakout album that involves some of their best work to date with a ton of catchy tunes and great lyrics. Check out, "Everything is Alright", "Better Open the Door", "L.G.F.U.A.D." and "Hold Me Down." To me this is the original Motion City Soundtrack and it will be hard to exceed this albums quality.

Even If It Kills Me: This album came out around 2 years ago and has been a big part of my iPod's play lists since. If you want the real taste of this album go for "This is For Real", "Even if it Kills Me", and "Calling All Cops."

With the small success of these three studio albums, true fans are anticipating great things from My Dinosaur Life. If you are new to the music of Motion City Soundtrack, you will truly enjoy their entertainment and they are one of the only bands today that I'd be willing to drive to the mall and purchase their album for full price instead of buying it on iTunes. The best part is they often give away free music downloads on their singles, so for their new album, search the web for the first single "Disappear."
