Artist of the Day: Phoenix

This French Rock Group is Poised for United States Domination

Jim Kelly
Phoenix is a French alternative rock band that has recently made its way across the Atlantic and touchdown in the United States and are ready to start making mega-hits. They already have some hit songs on the radio and on some popular television shows and commercials, but this band, with their new album and songs that will keep you awake and keep you relaxed at the same time are poised for something better than MTV soundtracks and car commercials.

The group is comprised of Thomas Mars, Deck D'Arcy, Christian Mazzalai, and Laurent Brancowitz. They formed their group at childhood and like every childhood dream they rocketed to success with some popular hits in Europe and have brought that success over the United States.

I first heard of Phoenix on iTunes when they made the Top 100 albums list and decided to check them out. I liked what I heard off of their first single and began furiously downloading and buying the rest of their hits.

They've released four studio albums and each one seems to be better than the next one, which is rare among bands today. Here is a list of their albums and the songs you should definitely check out.

United - Their first album released in 2000 featured only a few hits but they are definitely worth while downloads. "If I Ever Feel Better" and "Too Young" remain some of my favorite songs made by this band.

Alphabetical - Released in 2004 it brought the band to the mainstream more than their first album. Check out "Everything is Everything" and "Run Run Run."

It's Never Been Like That - Released just two years after Alphabetical, It's Never Been Like That gives fans brand new songs and even more hits. Check out "Consolation Prizes" and "Long Distance Call."

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix - Their most recent release has brought them the most success. "1901" and "Lisztomania" which have been the most played of the great songs on this album. They have performed various times on late night talk shows and by the time their fifth studio album comes out, look out for a major breakout hit.

Phoenix is one of the up and coming bands in this decade and they are poised to make a great run with Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and whatever they choose to put out next. They offer a great mix of tunes and lyrics and can relax you and keep you entertained at the same time. They are definitely worth listening too and buying.
