As the Jobless Rate in America Remains High, the Unemployed Demand a Fifth Extension of Unemployment Benefits

J Budd, RN
This is a bad time to be unemployed in America. A recent survey conducted by Rutgers University and posted on huffingtonpost.com found that almost 80% of people who were unemployed in the summer of 2009 were still unemployed as of March 2010. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the jobless rate in America to be 9.9%, the highest in 26 years. With this high jobless rate comes a growing number of people who have been collecting long term unemployment. So far the federal government has installed four extensions on unemployment and a fifth extension may be in the works.

And the unemployed say they need that fifth extension.

Tier V to Survive-The Unemployed Speak Out

While doing research for my most recent article on unemployment, I came across a grass roots movement on Facebook called Tier V to Survive. I contacted the group's creator Donna Anzick Davies to find out more about Tier V to Survive.

"I started Tier V to Survive on Facebook (in March 2010) because I was constantly searching Google and different websites to find the latest information on the status of Tier V legislature. I just wanted to go to 1 place where I could just see the latest information compiled. Whether it be a conversation that someone had with an aide or a letter that they received. And of course media links, but I wanted to make sure that they were reputable sources," according to Davies.

Davies says she has contacted every elected official regarding a Tier V and only heard back from the offices of Sens. John Kerry (D-MA) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH). Neither office offered any information about a Tier V unemployment extension. To those who question the unemployed's lack to job hunting, Davies says, "I need one and no one will hire me. Now they tell me that I am overqualified. I send out between 5 and 7 resumes a week, and to date I have been responded to by 12 companies and each of them told {me} that they had found someone with more suited qualifications."

Tier V To Survive's Facebook page provides links to various articles and information regarding unemployment in America as well as contact information for all members of Congress. At the time this article was written, Tier V to Survive had just over 400 followers.

Keep certifying unemployed status even after benefits have run out and there is no proposed extension. Don't let the unemployment rate be used by government and Wall Street as a sign of improvement. There is no recovery if people who have followed the rules of capitalism can't support themselves.

The long term unemployed in America have been left without job propects (thanks to all the outsourcing that's gone on over the last several years), uninsured, homeless, starving and without funds to survive for themselves and their families. No one in government cares or there would not be such opposition to a Tier V. There are no jobs out there. We've worked our entire lives only to lose everything. The long term unemployed need to march on Washington and, more importantly, remember at election time to vote out of office all the incumbents who oppose a Tier V. Tier V is not a luxury...it is a necessity. I have also read on the internet that Nancy Pelosi found the recent fax attack funny and responded by saying there will be no further unemployment extensions. Well, if she thinks people in desperation are "funny" maybe she needs to go. People should find out how you go about having her removed from office. It is pathetic that in this day and age, with the economic situation

This is a sad day when our government could give a care less about American families with children, which we are unable to feed and care for. After striving to get a higher education, with a price tag attached, this has not resulted in the ability to gain employment in this horrid economy. Therefore, to be dependant long term on all these tiers and to run out, puts is in a horrible situation; all of which is a somewhat new development. Being that we used to for years and years be self sufficient, this has been a damning blow. Not being able to get a job in such a highly competitive market is mainly due to a record high rate of unemployment and those who have no success in obtaining employment need a fifth round of money coming in to get through! Has our government run to our aid? No!!! Leadership, Do something to get checks in our hands. To ignore this problem will only create more harm to everyone. This can only get as this will be a negative effect on all of us eventually. There wil

Senator McDermott, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee (the seat of power where our issue is concerned), has announced a special hearing on the long term unemployment problem to be held on, June 10, 2010. Experts have been invited to address the Committee on that day, and the rest of us are invited to make written submissions in a format described below. June 10 is for the invited experts, the Committee will continue to discuss the issue after the 10th.

Here's an excerpt from the advisory:

In announcing the hearing, Chairman McDermott stated, "Our first step to respond to long-term unemployment is obvious -- continue the emergency federal unemployment programs to prevent millions of workers from losing their benefits. If we can afford wars, tax cuts, and bank bailouts, then we can certainly afford to maintain programs for workers who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own. But we also need to think about additional steps to help those trying to return to wor

Special congressional hearing began June 10th, but I did not see progress only testimonials.

    LETTER 9

    The petition has 31,349 signatures.

There is something coming up that could turn out to be some good news for us.

I know we're all disappointed with the way things have been going for the 'exhaustees,' those of us who have exhausted all unemployment benefits, which includes the 99ers. However, there's something else brewing that seems to be in our favor and a little action on our part might help it along.

Anyone in Las Vegas knows how bad it really is and how desperately we need a Tier 5 unemployment extension. Last I knew the construction industry was at 75% for lost jobs. Add in those of us with an age factor, and it is totally hopeless. Everyone I know is bring more and more people into their single family dwellings just to try and keep the bills paid. At least I can help you get a free discount RX card if you need it. See http://deliveringonthepromise.com/saver/

Jennifer, also check out the Face Book site "Now: Jobless / Next: Homeless. We are a large group of 99er's doing the same thing the Tier V to Survive group are doing. Also check this online site, started by the same person who started the above FB site. http://joblessunite.yolasite.com/

We have done a fax attack on Congress and last week did one on President Obama. Thank you for looking!
