If you haven't seen the infomercial, the Clever Clasp is made of new magnetic ends that attach to your necklace. Bring the ends together and the magnets click, fastening your necklace A quick twist locks the magnets in place. Your necklace is securely fastened without the hassle of dealing with the small ring clasp. It is an original idea that has potential, but does the Clever Clasp live up to its promise?
The Clever Clasp attached easily to the ring clasp, but the goldtone was somewhat cheap and gaudy looking, especially next a high quality 24k gold chain. I wouldn't wear it with an updo hairstyle. If you have medium length or longer hair to hide the cheap looking construction, the Clever Clasp is a wonder. The magnets are very strong. There is no need to try and match them exactly. They are strong enough that they click together when brought within a few inches of each other. A quick turn of the locking mechanism secures the clasp in place, so not only does the Clever Clasp make fastening your necklace easier, it makes it more secure. If you've ever lost a necklace because of a faulty clasp, the Clever Clasp may help prevent another loss.
The downside to the Clever Clasp is the construction. It feels sturdy, but it looks like cheap costume jewelry. It really limits the hairstyles you can wear if you to want to advertise the bright gold clasp on your necklace. The included silver clasp is not as bad looking as the gold clasp, but it did begin to tarnish a few hours after putting it on. A clear coat of nail polish to seal out natural skin oils may help prevent discoloration. The fine hair at the nape of the neck can also get trapped in the locking mechanism if care is not taken. Other than these two issues, the Clever Clasp is a good product that delivers on its claims. Two Clever Clasps, one goldtone and one silver, and two three inch chain extenders are included in the set for $9.95 plus shipping. The products have not yet made their way to retailers and are only available through mail order.
