As Seen on T.V. - Do These Gadgets Really Work?

Here Are a Few that Have Been Tested

Every time we watch television we always see something advertised that promises to give you a perfect pedicure, remove any kind of stain you throw at it, give you muscle strength and tone muscles so you look like the Incredible Hulk, or put anything together that comes apart or breaks. But do they really work. Our local Channel 6 News (www.wate.com) put some of these "As Seen On T.V." items to the test and here is what they found out.

One thing they tested was the Ped Egg. This is a small egg shaped gadget that is supposed to smooth and remove calluses from feet. Well Channel 6 News tested it with a professional in the Knoxville area. Kate used the Ped Egg on one of her regular customers, Gina, and found that it is not what it says. The first thing they found was that it is no where near as gentle as advertised. It actually left "dips" in the bottom of Gina's feet. Kate actually compared the Ped Egg to a "razor" and stated that "I think it is not safe to use at home." I have to agree. After trying it myself, I really do not like it at all. It felt like I was scraping my foot with a knife.

Channel 6 News also tested out the Aqua Globes which are glass that is hand blown and stained and supposed to keep plants watered for up to two weeks. 6 News took the Aqua Globes to a University of Tennessee associate professor in Biosystems Engineering and Soil Science Department. The professor put them to the test and after two weeks found out that they delivered on their promises. They did keep the plants watered just like advertised. These I bought as a gift for a friend and she absolutely loves them. She no longer has to have people water her plants when she has to be gone.

Now everyone knows how hard it is to keep produce fresh and not let it get too ripe or rot. Green Bags claim they will keep produce fresh for at least a month longer than leaving them out. However, when 6 News tested them on bananas, iceberg lettuce, strawberries, and carrots, they found that three of the fruit and vegetables fared no better. The bananas did do a little better but not to the extent shown in the commercials. I personally have tried these and found that I truly threw my money away. To be honest, my fruit and vegetables stayed fresher longer without being in the bags.

Last but not least they tested Mighty Putty which claims it can be used to "pull a fully loaded tractor-trailer". This product rated about 50/50 on the tests it was put through. The first test was a leaky faucet. The Mighty Putty was applied and left to dry. But when the water was turned back on the leak was not fixed. They then did a test where they used the putty to put a broken handle back on a mug. After letting the mug sit for about 30 minutes, the putty did hold (even with hot coffee in it). It also went on to hold up a cinder block attached to a chain. However, it did fail the tractor-trailer test. One person told 6 News that this Mighty Putty might be a temporary fix for things, but they could not see it being a permanent one. This one I have not tried myself, but my neighbor purchased some to repair a broken lamp. That was around two months ago, and it is still holding strongly.

Therefore, you can not always believe everything you see and hear on television. Some things may work perfect and just like they say, others may turn out to be the biggest junk you ever bought. To be honest, when ordering items off of television it is really just "pot luck" and trial and error. The best way to look at it is if it sounds way too good to be true it probably is. But if it has some chance of working then it just might.
