As Tall as Lions: A New Wave of Music Has Arrived

Alex Parks
Are you getting a bit bored with the many indistinguishable bands in the screamo/pop-rock scene? Do you feel as though you haven't heard a 21st Century American rock band that is worthy of your CD purchase? If you can sympathize with either or both of these questions, I strongly urge you to check out the As Tall as Lions self titled album.

For the last five or so years of my life I have spent a good deal of time trying to keep up with the various kinds of indie/pop/emo rock that has come out, and I sincerely believe that the self titled album from As Tall As Lions may in fact be one of the best pieces of indie musicianship that has been released in the 21st Century (except possibly Menos El Oso). The album starts with one of my personal favorite songs, "Stab City." Within the first 45 seconds of this song you will realize just how talented this band is. Between the guitarists' harmonies, the intricate yet powerful rhythms created by the drums and bass, the beautiful accents and lead parts performed by the piano, and the extremely smooth and powerful fashion in which all 5 band members are able to sing, this band is truly incredible. In addition to musical talent of this band, their ability to write catchy, fun, and easy to listen to songs allows you to play this self titled CD over and over again, without fear of becoming bored.

Some of my personal favorites on this album include the song "Stab City," with its very powerful bass lines as well as beautiful singing from lead man, Dan Nigro's, their hit single "Love, Love, Love, Love," which includes beautiful vocal harmonies as well as an absolutely lovely use of piano arpeggios, and "Ghost of York," which highlights the talents of each one of these band members, from intricate bass lines to spectacular singing. These are just a few of the eleven amazing songs on the As Tall As Lions Self Titled Album.

So, if you are looking for a new band to check out, I would highly recommend this album. During your first listen, I recommend paying special attention to the way this band is able to create harmony between both the two guitar players, as well as the guitar and the bass. Also, take special note of the way in which the back up vocals add to the effect of songs such as "Maybe I'm Just Tired." The effect is simply stunning : )
