According to Editor in Chief, Joanna Coles, readers were outraged at the magazine for presenting Ashlee Simpson in a July feature article in which she embraced her looks, only to "allegedly" change them a month later. Marie Claire received hundreds of angry letters, aimed at both the publication and Simpson. In response, Coles included an editor's note regarding Simpson's "obvious" nose job in September's issue. "She was quoting chapter and verse about how crucial it is to love yourself as you are, etc. We're dazed and confused and disappointed by her choice too!"
Simpson said in the interview, "Everyone is made differently, and that's what makes us beautiful and unique. I want girls to look in the mirror and feel confident." The cover story had Simpson help the Los Angeles' Green Dot Public Schools to create a mural celebrating the female figure, which included empowering messages for young girls.
The magazine's credibility came into question. Some readers' comments vomited the angry sentiments of "You couldn't have picked a worse role model," and "The article ... was a joke, right?" Others lashed out at Simpson with the words "hypocritical," "vapid, self-absorbed, [and] body-conscious." One reader's stinging comment, "She runs counter to everything I've come to appreciate in your magazine."
Coles also wrote, "What can we say? Her nose, her choice. (Although we rather liked her original one: She had that Gisele Bundchen thing going on)."
Spokesman for Simpson, Rob Shuter said, "I'm sorry the new editor is using Ashlee to get publicity for her magazine."
No stranger to ill-repute, Simpson has had backlash before. She received massive criticism for lip-syncing during a 2004 Saturday Night Live performance, in which she blamed her band for playing the wrong song, only to change her horrible cover up story to a case of acid reflux. Petitions were formed to ban Ashlee from continuing her sham of a music career. Though denying the cosmetic surgery, Simpson did tell Marie Claire that beauty is only skin deep. "Have there been times when I've been insecure? Hell, yeah! But have I ever felt unhappy with what I'm actually doing in my life? No."
The September issue of Marie Claire is on newsstands August 15th.
