Ashton Kutcher SNL Return is 'Mature' Kutcher's Birthday Gift

Robert Dougherty
Ashton Kutcher has become an SNL veteran all of a sudden. Yesterday's Ashton Kutcher SNL episode was his fourth in the last seven years, getting him close to the five-timers club. He started his career on the show by coming out in his underwear in 2003, back when he was still the goofy 70's Show guy. Last night, he called back to that bit to prove how far he'd come since then - but as the fourth Ashton Kutcher SNL show proved, he may not be that mature yet at 32.

Kutcher and pretty much half of Hollywood is in the upcoming Valentine's Day, so SNL chose him to plug the movie. He also got the gig as a birthday gift, since he turned 32 at midnight.

To show his newfound maturity, he tried to avoid jumping out and down at awesome things, but it didn't last long. And in another nod to his taste in older women, he played a pool boy who lived to regret sleeping with a 110-year-old rich grandmother.

Kutcher's SNL return also had him play Mel Gibson in a View parody - though his Gibson didn't curse on the air - and Billy Bush in a spoof of the Oscar's countless Best Picture nods. A commercial also let him enjoy the benefits of "Cialis for threeways."

On the political front, SNL had Greta Van Susteren and her FOX friends attack "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" repeal talk, while Andy Samberg went off as Rahm Emanuel in an "even tempered" apology, and Eliot Spitzer presented his unique Valentine's cards on Weekend Update. In an odd pop culture spoof, a game show had contestants fail to guess what USA's popular Burn Notice is.

The Ashton Kutcher SNL show was the last one for two weeks, since the Olympics will take over NBC soon. For the fourth time in 2010, the program brought back a former host, with Kutcher as the biggest veteran of the bunch.

But although Kutcher has hosted four times, he still may not be taken seriously like others who's hosted so often. To many, he will always be that goofball kid who first hosted the show, even if he's closer to his mid 30's now.

Kutcher may still have his share of backlash, but it is middling compared to what Jennifer Lopez went through at her peak. But she is making her comeback now, and part of that involves singing and hosting for SNL's return on February 27, which she last did nine years ago.

  • Saturday Night Lame (SNL) 2/7/2010

The lack of funnyness and the dearth of humor on SNL has become monumental.

  • Ashton's Abysmal Gibson Impersonation 2/7/2010

There's a lot of pent up anger out there in Hollywood that finally found a pretext (Mel Gibson) to allow its release. SNL is apparently no exception.
