Asian-American Leaders Speak Out Against "Why I Hate Blacks" Editorial

Sin Lucas
An editorial written by Kenneth Eng and published by Asian Week entitled "Why I Hate Blacks" is drawing criticism from Asian American Leaders.

It took me a while to find a copy of the article because it's been removed from Asian Week's website, but I did manage to find it and I've included the article below in its entirety.

Kenneth Eng, Feb 23, 2007

"Here is a list of reasons why we should discriminate against blacks, starting from the most obvious down to the least obvious:

• Blacks hate us. Every Asian who has ever come across them knows that they take almost every opportunity to hurl racist remarks at us.

In my experience, I would say about 90 percent of blacks I have met, regardless of age or environment, poke fun at the very sight of an Asian. Furthermore, their activity in the media proves their hatred: Rush Hour, Exit Wounds, Hot 97, etc.

• Contrary to media depictions, I would argue that blacks are weak-willed. They are the only race that has been enslaved for 300 years. It's unbelievable that it took them that long to fight back. On the other hand, we slaughtered the Russians in the Japanese-Russo War.

• Blacks are easy to coerce. This is proven by the fact that so many of them, including Reverend Al Sharpton, tend to be Christians. Yet, at the same time, they spend much of their time whining about how much they hate "the whites that oppressed them."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Christianity the religion that the whites forced upon them?

• Blacks don't get it. I know it's a blunt and crass comment, but it's true. When I was in high school, I recall a class debate in which one half of the class was chosen to defend black slavery and the other half was chosen to defend liberation. Disturbingly, blacks on the prior side viciously defended slavery as well as Christianity. They say if you don't study history, you're condemned to repeat it.

In high school, I only remember one black student ever attending any of my honors and AP courses. And that student was caught cheating.

It is rather troubling that they are treated as heroes, but then again, whites will do anything to defend them."

Since running this column, Asian Week has come under fire and Asian American leaders have called on publication to end their relationship with Eng, as well as print an editorial refuting the article. They've also requested that the publication review their editorial policy.

It is my opinion that this article is nothing more then the ignorant ramblings of a racist, narrow minded individual, but in the end it was Asian Week's decision to publish it.

I understand the whole concept of freedom of speech. You're not always going to like or agree with what others have to say, but don't publications have a responsibility to their readers and the general public not to publish articles that insult and degrade other races and cultures, even if it is an op/ed piece?

Is there not enough hate, animosity and ignorance to go around without media organizations adding fuel to the fire? Let me know what you think.

  • I'm native american I have to say this 10/5/2010

I believe white Blacks and Asians should sit down and be quite because this land of soil called America don't belong to you at all. Natives never hated anyone but you all are hypocrites and criminals your selves.

It takes a lot of effort and free time to hate anybody. If Eng has time to hate an entire race, then my gosh, what does he do all day? My guess would be nothing.

Eng sounds like a man in trouble. Asian Week should help their writer obtain what help he needs. I am not a Christian, but I would recommend forgiving him. Hopefully, he will learn from his mistakes. Hopefully, someone will be his friend and teach him better.

Amen Joe...the moron can think and say whatever he wants, but kudos to AsianWeek for pulling the story. Would've been better had they not published it at all, but hindsight is always 20/20. It amazes me still that people can be so ignorant as to believe that hatred like this can still be accepted. Mr. Eng, if I had my way, you would never work in journalism again.

Freedom of speech does mean you have the right to be published anywhere. All it means is that you can't be imprisoned for expressing unpopular beliefs. That's it... this guy can't go to jail. That's all it means. Everyone else in the world is well within their rights to ignore him in any and every way. Not publishing his works is DEFINITELY NOT an infringement of his freedom of speech. Freedom of speech doesn't mean people can't hate him for his beliefs... it's all fair game. He just can't go to jail for it. The only entity that has to tolerate him, by law, is the State. The rest of us are free to not tolerate his racist rantings, and that's OUR freedom.

    I agree. Well done Sindy!

    FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS EVERYTHING
    great article.

  • Question Everything 2/28/2007

I agree with you. Freedom of speech is a great and necessary thing, but there is enough hate in the world. Asian Weekly made a poor choice in publishing that article, and it was their choice to make.
