Asian Carp Threatening Great Lakes

"Flying Carp" Very Aggressive

Gary Davis
The Asian carp is having the last laugh on us. The Asian carp is also called the 'flying carp." It is also called the Silver Asian carp. Whatever you want to call this fish it is big-time trouble and it is our own fault.

I wrote an article over a year ago on Associated Content titled "Silver Asian Carp Breaks Boy's Jaw." Currently there is an article written by Steve Pardo for the Detroit News titled "Asian carp may have breached Great Lakes barrier."

While Pardo's article reveals some of the history of the Asian Carp you have to go back to the 1970s to see where the carp came from and as the name implies it is Asia.

We brought the fish over from Asia to deal with algae problems.

The problem is that we have forgotten everything we ever learned about the environment.

The Asian carp is not native to our country. It is huge at times reaching one-hundred pounds and it is extremely aggressive. Further it breeds dramatically and can out-do most species as far as dominating the environment.

The Asian carp has been known to knock men out of their boats and as you can read in my article it can break limbs.

From the delta of the Mississippi to the Illinois River all the way up to the Great Lakes the Asian carp has come.

Now it appears it either has or is soon to break through an electric barrio that was put in place to prevent the Asian carp from moving into and ruining the Great Lakes and, it is very possible that both could happen.

In Mr. Pardo's article there is a video of these very aggressive (and ugly) Asian carp as well as a close-up of one of the fish.

I have fished in the Illinois River and I can tell you that there is no fish that could possibly fight that fish.

What the future of the Great Lakes will be if the Asian carp gets in is hard to imagine or to predict. It is better that we become proactive and get rid of this fish.

A little algae doesn't seem like such a big problem now.
